hi everyone i have just finished putting my engine back together after putting a re13 cam and a better head on. the engine is running really rough at the moment. really reluctant to rev and very little power. it is although you have to wait for the engine to catch up with the revs. it sort of sputters its way up the revs. damn its really hard to explain this on here.

the things i am concerned about are the placement of the inlet manifold as it does not have the locating points on it. the use of standard valve springs on the re13 cam. the part that i have my biggest doubts about is the dizzy
i had switched back to the old points ignition system after my second eletronic ignition system failed me prior to the car coming of the road at xmas time to get its cam etc done. i have just put new points and condensor in still to no avail.

is there anything that any of you can suggest i look at or can point out i might have overlooked.

Sounds like fuel related problem. Is it running too rich maybe? Would the fact that it has a different head mean that it may need the jets adjusted?

make sure your leads off your dizzy go 1, 3, 4, 2 anti clockwise
also your dizzy timing is correct

for the inlet manifold, line the top of it up with the top of the gasket

could be... points or plugs gap
blown head gasket perhaps?
could be running on 3 cylinders, check spark at all plugs

i have a 1.5" su.
the engine has only not even 1km with the new head and gasket on. i am running it with a BQ needle. it is a richer needle that i had been put on to. might be too rich for all i know. the timing is all right too as is the firing order.

Set the valve clearance to .018" with std rockers. Or, .020" with 1.5 rockers. If set to .012" it will be cammy as hell and run like a pig.

re the manifold- I MIG weld a bit of metal on the ends and file it to slide over 2 of the studs.

i didn't actually receive any directions with the cam and as i couldn't afford vernier gears or anything like that i timed it back to the original factory specs with the timing marks.

I don't use vernier gears either, but I check it with a degree wheel and get it right with offset cam keys. Available from MiniSpares UK.

RE-13 cam should be timed in to give full inlet lift around 104-105* ATDC.
If you used the stock gears and key it will be a bit later. Won't make it rough though. Set the tappets like I said.

Check the plug leads are on the right plugs. You can buy offset keys as a cheaper alyernative to vernier gears. Never buy a cam without a spec sheet with it.
