So I've just driven all over Cairns looking fo some oil for the mini. Picked up a ryco cartridge oil filter from Rapeco, it's still missing the O rings..... They slugged me $26 for the thing?? Bit steep... Then I went to Ricebarn n spotted an oil filter there for $16... Ryco brand, same same...

Anyways, I've only ever used Pennzoil GT Street Machine Mineral oil 20w/50 in my engine.... Couldn't find the stuff anywhere..... I've just jumped online and found this:

In an effort to simplify our product range, Shell Australia will no longer supply Pennzoil branded lubricants in the Australian marketplace from 1 June 2010. Shell globally will now focus on Shell Helix as the core passenger car motor oil in all markets outside of the USA.

For the majority of Pennzoil products, there are direct replacements in the Shell Helix and Shell Rimula ranges. To find out more please visit www.shell.com.au

So now I need to try and find a replacement mineral oil..... What a load of crap.... Other then K mart brand, what are some other suggestions???

'They' are all making things harder and harder for us classic car people.

I actually wasn't aware that Shell were the distributors for Pennzoil. I used to use BP Corse + (no spelling error) but a similar thing happened other way round. They only do Castrol now.

I now use Shell Helix 20W-50. It is a good oil and reasonably priced.

Repco are doing Repco Oil filter and 5ltrs of Shell Helix 20/50 for $18.99 the lot! I just gave the moke an oil change

A few options:

Shell Helix
Castrol GTX (Not GTX2 - this is for multivalve)
Valvoline Multigrade - I refuse to use this, I reckon it kills motors!
Castrol Magnatec - Not sure but I think this is all mineral.

A good race oil used to be BP Corse 50C - Not sure if this is still made!

BP Corse Plus was made for the Mini, what a shame it is gone.

Supercrap also see a few oils for older cars.

An interesting point was brought up by GR with regard to the level of molybdenum disulphide additives in modern oils. Important for us old car users with a block mounted cam swinging in the breeze, but not so much of an issue for modern cars with an OHC running in an oil bath.

With low levels being found these in more modern oils, I wonder if the synthetic is also affected even if it is a heavier weight? Without an easy way of finding out, its scared me off anything too slick. Its easier to stick with what you know, but as the brands change marketing direction or disappear altogether it gets a little difficult to choose.

Edge works well , but is astronomical in price. Kmart oil is a really nice option but not everyone seems convinced all the same to put a shopping center oil (even if it has been independently tested as a very good oil) in their beloved machines, and nobody seems to actually label their oils as specifically for old technology, non-ohc old machines anymore...

Shell Helix HX3 still is.....maybe tomorrow will be a different story.....

<EDIT> from the Shell website

20W-50 multi-grade motor oil.
Cleans and protects older engines.
Shell Helix HX3 is formulated with cleansing technology to help stop dirt and sludge build up.

Suitability

Petrol engines fitted with conventional carburettors.

Main reason is incompatability with the Gearbox, although some synthetics do work there.

No. It is a quality oil from a major supplier. That is why a lot of people here use it.

Well, it is about as mineral as you will get in any oil these days

I don't feel it is a good as Corse +, but I haven't found anything else that is. I've been using the Shell Helix for a while now, although I change it a little more regularly. It's quite good.
