Why would I drive it to a shopping centre to get damaged?

And considering on my drive out to K-mart Id drive past 2 Super Cheap Autos, 1 Autobarn, 2 Repco's and 1 Auto One store. Dosnt make much sense to me...

Forever I have used Valvoline XLD premium 20W/50 in my minis.

It has always worked really well for me as long as I did religious oil changes. 5000km MAX.

YMMY

cheers

This is the oil that I reckon causes wear in A - Series, I think there are better oils out there. I remember with K-Mart used to see 5lt containers of this for $12.99....it was always a budget oil.

Well, it is about as mineral as you will get in any oil these days

I don't feel it is a good as Corse +, but I haven't found anything else that is. I've been using the Shell Helix for a while now, although I change it a little more regularly. It's quite good.

I'm still using BP Corse+. If you were over this way you would be welcome to 5 litres :)

We have always used Penrite HPR in our Minis on recommendation from our local Mini workshop.

Hey no worries I respect your opinion, but in the last 20 years of owning minis I've never had major engine woes, premature wear or other problems from using exactly the oil specified. Like I said, YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary, typo before)

With even saying that though, just seeing the sheer number of people recommending the KMX stuff makes me think I'll be using that when the engine for the van is put together. Good price and seemly universal acclaim will do me

cheers

Jacob

Just go to Woolworths - I can't say for sure if it's identical to K Mart but I was looking at it the other day and the Woolies Home Brand 20w/50 oil comes in the exact same style bottle - same cap, same little indentation at the top (for a label or whatever) so most likely comes from the same supplier at least, but comes as a 5 litre (i think KMX tends to either be 4 litre or 6l on special). I can't imagine an oil company would formulate specific different products to be used for each of the own-brands that they supply to.

I guess an even more likely match would be Coles as it's the same group as KMart but I haven't been in a Coles recently myself.

If it wasn't so expensive I'd use the same Motul 5100 semi synthetic that I use in my bike but at around $65.00 for 4lt it pains the wallet some..

Here's the blurb on it:

Specially developed for engines that require simultaneous lubrication with its transmission applications, 5100 ESTER 10W-40 maintains
stability and ensures less friction even at
extreme temperatures or under heavy loads.
With its extreme pressure additives, gear shifts
are enhanced. 5100 ESTER 10W-40 guarantees efficient wet clutch performance as well as gearbox longevity.

I use Shell Helix semi synthetic in both my Range Rover and will use it in the mini after I've run in the rebuilt engine in her..

even with the extra distance you'd still make a $ saving.

Hanra, find pretty much ANY API SG rated 20w50 weight oil, and use that. You don't do anywhere near enough K's in that car for it to make any difference.

The important part is not the weight of the oil; choose that depending on your climate. What you want in a Mini is an oil with an API spec no newer than SG (SM is really common these days). That means the oil has a chemical composition (I forget the specifics, have a search around.. there's good info on here somewhere) suitable for our gearbox-in-the-sump.

I do use the KMX oil, I find it holds viscosity better when really hot, and maintains quality (doesn't go black as fast) longer than some others. But then, I have a K-mart not far away, too.

For general info, my daughter gets her Mini serviced at Link Automotive who specialise in Minis and they always put Penrite HPR30 in hers, it has been on that for around 15 years, it is a 20w60 grade that is API SM rated.
The power plant has never been apart from new, it however has only done about 120,000 miles from new.

I thought the Penrite HPR stuff was semi synthetic?? I've ended up going with Shell Helix HX3 20w/50. Once again the Ryco oil filter was missing the 2 smaller seals. Also changed the fuel filter, it obviously wasn't doing much filtering.....  The filter has detached from the filter body...!
