The Penrite HPR30 is a 20w60 SM mineral oil, bit of info in the link below,
as I said Link Automotive have been using it in our Mini for the past 15 years.

Penrite is good oil, I used to use the semi-synthetic HPR60 in my ute and it was great.

I think I will try this next time in the Mini!

I used Penrite HPR30 in my daily drive Morris 1100 from 1998 to about 2007 when I switched to KMX.
When I switched oils I discovered that I was now using less oil. It was leaking less oil from oil seals. It was also making less mayo under the oil cap in winter.

I will not use HPR30 again.

I would not base my choice of oil on what a mechanic uses in his workshop. Most times he is using the oil that makes more profit for him.

I swore by HPR30 as well, until I realised they'd updated the formula to SM. They now recommend one of their ($$) Classic range of oils for the Mini, and not HPR30.

Were it not for the price and performance of KMX, I'd be using BP Corse+ (if they still make it, been a while since I checked) or Castrol Edge, which I think is the same oil. Exxy, though...

Interesting!!!

I use the HPR stuff in the BMW, and used to use it in my XR6T also.

Brad, KMX oil is fine and sufficient for your running, it is what I use on the road, otherwise it is Castrol Edge for the race car. And toss that cartridge thing away and fit a spin on. If you want a high quality spin on filter, K&N make one.

You still doing the street parade Friday night?

Really Steve, you use KMX also? Hmmm, well Ive already put the Shell Helix HX3 in...

Can the spin on filter heads still be purchased new these days? Is the oil pipe fitting in the same spot?

Not sure about Friday night.. Got no where to put the car afterwards.. Bit to much of a hassle for a few laps of Mareeba town I think..

I use nothing but HPR30 in my minis and have done for the past 9 years..
The local mini specialist highly recommends aswell as serveral other specialists.

I work for a local auto parts store and having spoken to several reps in regards to the qualities of oils in different brands, everything continues to come back to HPR30.

I'll stick with my penrite oil for the mini, and i run a nulon 15/40 everyday motor oil in my Fairmont. Nulon, australian owned and run.. One of a few companys that havent been sold off shore yet. (mini serviced every 1,000miles and the fairmont every 5,000kms)

Each to there own i guess. As long as the oil grading is sufficeint i'm sure any brand will be sufficient. Thats my 2 cents.

If you are changing your oil every 1,000miles then you could use any oil with the correct grade and not see any issues.

HPR30 doesn't hold pressure as well as other oils in that price range when hot. As you said you've been using it for 9 years. The formulation has changed to a different standard recently and Penrite no longer recommend it for minis even?

If your really into your oil, why doesn't anyone send it off for analysis. That's the only way your going to know what your getting.

Seeing as we have been using the Penrite HPR30 in our Mini for the past 15 years I rang Penrite and asked the question about the HPR30 and the Penrite Classic Light, which are both 20w60. Their web site does mention the Classic Light and the suitability for BMC Minis.

The answer I got was that the HPR30 was recommended for a daily driver.
The Classic Light was more for rarely driven and laid up vehicles, the Classic supposedly has more anti rust chemistry in it for rarely used vehicles. Apart from that they said they are the same oil.

Who knows, make of it what you want? As a side note I am a member on a V8 Holden forum, there has been a bit of a discussion on the detergency levels in the Penrite oils, a few of the owners have pulled down their V8's that have run on Penrite with regular oil changes and found quite a bit of sludge starting to form in the motors. Whether that is just something peculiar to the Holden V8 or whether the Penrite is a little low in their detergent package who knows.

Penrite deciced to add what it calls friction modifiers to its HPR range about 2 years ago, the only reason that a oil company adds this is because they can use a lower grade base oil which cuts there costs.

The last comapny that tried to sell this as agood thing was Castrol during the oil crisis of the 70s annd it almost ruined there rep when they bought out GTX with friction modifiers, it got so bad that the engine rebuilders were refusing to cover ant warranty problems on motors that were run in on it aand many race and rally teams stopped using it because it would loose oil pressure very quickly

The problem with the additive is that it decreases the oils ability to cling to surfaces and provide protection to the surfaces of bearings that are not pressure fed i.e roller and needle roller bearings in the gearbox and transfer gears and the caamshaft, follower valve train in a mini engine

As M1100 said dont be fooled by what workshops use as oil companies will go to great lenghts to get workshops to use there brands, some evn make the oil almost free and will fit out the shop with all sorts of gear to seal the deal and as for ringing a company to ask them forget it they are there to sell thier product and will only give the company line

Use what ever you want but if you want the real answers talk to those thatamke a living rebuilding engines and ask them what they use in thier engines

To show what Penrite know, for a long time they recommended ATF for the auto gearbox in a Mini or Morris 1100.

Edit They still do!

Code:
Recommendation for: MORRIS (GB) 1100, MK1/II, 1300 MK II/GT, 1800 (1962-1972)
Engine   CLASSIC LIGHT
Gearbox   COMBINED
Automatic   ATF DX-II

Edit #2
Code:
Recommendation for: AUSTIN (GB) MINI, MINI COOPER, MINI MOKE, 1100 MK1/II, 1800 SERIES 1/II (1959-1976)
Engine   CLASSIC LIGHT
Gearbox
Automatic   ATF AUTO 33
Rear axle   COMBINED

They don't even recommend the same Auto oil for an Austin or a Morris!

Brad, I'll have spin on head and pipe here if you want (and correct gasket). Been warned off "new" spin on heads, so go for a sh one.

Talk to you separately about Friday night.

The new spin-on heads they are selling now have a funny metric thread in them, it's not 1/4 BSP like all the genuine ones.
