Watto or Anybody please help us with this....Dose it sound right that we may have a minimatic (that is no longer a Minimatic) inside a Cooper S body. As the body has unused straps in the boot, right hand tank anchors. Right hand fuel tank hole covered over, luggage support brackets. On the radiator shroud the numbers are M2 about 3/8 high then below that is P4 or a PA and then 82 both about 1/2 high.. There is no number stamped on the fire wall. We also found whilst looking for the number "cooper" written on the fire wall in crayon, this was under a few layers of paint. Dose it sound right that when the minimatic was ordered that they just grabbed a cooper s body..
Thanks to anyone that may be able to help us.

I seriously doubt it - though, really, anything is possible.

John Smidt said he often rebirthed Cooper Ss as Mini Ks, because he could insure and sell a Mini K a lot easier than a Cooper S, and then could sell the Cooper S engine, brakes, etc, for more, and subsequently make more money out of the car. No idea how many of those are around.

It might be possible that something similar was done with your car.

Just something to consider.

Cheers,
Watto.

this was in the Cooper S Identities thread, but I thought it was interesting and warranted it's own discussion

To confirm it was actually a 'matic, does it have the gear selector hole (same as an 850) in the front of the firewall?

I had a mini matic that had a factory fitted strenghtening bar and flattened front recess for the oil cooler. It had a m2o6 code on the radiator shroud. However it had a matching id plate with matic numbers. 4 digits on thefirewall and the id number stamped on the inner guard. It had no S id in the boot, one tank and only the front end being cooper s. All the rest was matic stuff

Yes, the pics are too small to see any detail.

Try posting them bigger on photo bucket, or similar, and then pasting the link.

Cheers,
Watto.

Our mistake, using the word "crayon". We should have written a wax marker (Used to write on metal) as this seems to have attracted childish responses.

In the UK they Factory Fitted the 'matic Gearboxes in to every model except the Cooper S. So Coopers were available in the UK as an auto. I don't think we had any produced here that way, but I have seen a few Factory Specials.
