Right. So when it's freezing,

some times the mini won't start.

Like this morning sitting right now in my gf's garage then pushed out in the driveway lol since 6.20am.

It's seems to be mornings he just can't kick over sometimes.

I have a new dry cell battery much better then the old big block,
electronic ignition rover dizzy* soon to be megajolt.

It's all been serviced-tuned but still sometimes she won't start in the cold 2 or 3 go's
Or turn the key till the battery has not much kick to turn her over.
Runs 9.2.1 comp
Twin 1-1\4 su's
Try give some choke or gas play with it all and some times some times not.

So is this a genral mini problem?
What can I do to fix this? It's getting annoying!

Thanks :)

Check all the terminals and connections at the start solenoid are clean and tight, any voltage drop there will give you trouble.

i made it home after a jump start.

yeh i dont have one, it's a rover set up.

im thinking either my alternator is not putting enough charge, it's the starter or dizzy.

but i will check the connections like suggested.

Couple things it could be, like stated, starter solenoid, battery doesnt have enoough CCA (drop into an Auto store and ask them to put the Battery Tester on it) takes 2 min and tells you if the CCA is down - NOT voltage... cca is what starts it!

If you clutch start (manual rover right?) ie/ put it on reds, roll, pop clutch... does it start first go? If so, then fuel, carb, etc etc are all good and its turning the motor thats the prob. Electrical/battery I mean.

yeh does go rrrrrrr.. just does not kick over all the time.

i did try more choke did not make a difference.

it only happens some times and it nearly go's to kick but does not start.

after trying to start it for 40mins it was running the battery down.

i gave up and did the jump start kicked over straight up.

i have a yellow top dry cell battery.

Hang on, if a jump start kicks it straight over, I would say its the battery. How old is it?
Can you try another battery? ie/ Can you grab the one out of the other car... swap them for like a week or few days or something to test?

Otherwise a CCA test at local auto store/electrician will let you know if its the battery too.

If it was starter, solenoid, etc it would do the same thing with the jumpstart... ie/ wouldnt start.

Pete

PS: Could simply be mini gremlins, they are everywhere lol...

does start better now, when i first bought it cranked hard!

now not as hard, leads me to believe it's a charge problem?

Yeah sounds like it!

If the battery isnt getting charged, and gets low (voltage) then it tries to crank, the CCA gets lower and lower. I have tested 500 CCA batteries that only show 30CCA left and they just wont start the car.

Throw YOUR battery (2 month old one) into another car and try to start the other car. If it doesnt start, your battery is stuffed... simple.

WHY is is stuffed - well, that could be alternator, overcharging, undercharging, etc etc..
A battery drain, etc...

Peter

They can test the battery itself (in or out of the car)
Alternator, etc comes second, ie, if you find the battery is FINE, then something else... sparky can check the alternator charging, etc etc.

My money is on low CCA in the battery caused by a low (or no) charging alternator.

Pete

PS: Yes, take to battery place they can check it out ... should be FREE to test it!!!!

if it only happens when its cold, how about a car blanket???

(and before people think i am being a smart arse, i had the same issue with my car a while back at mum and dads because their garage was more open. I covered the car in a blanket type cover and didnt have issue after that)

I had similar with mine, and just threw a movers blanket (cheap at bunnings) over the carby, etc to avoid probs in the mornings)

Its not a stupid idea - it works... I actually popped the hood, put blanket and took it off in the mornings...

I still think he has battery probs cause it jump starts fine.

Cheers,
Peter

you are right it's deff a alternator problem.

it has done the same thing for 2 battery's now.

off i hunt for a 80amp then or more.

il ask tony what he sells, see how big it is.

Battery Flat?

The dry battery is your problem.

They are quite fussy on how they are charged and the ripple from an Alternator kills them pretty quick. Wet Batteries are a PITA but they stand up to Alternator Charging quite OK.
