In response to the orignal question. My mini was bought sight unseen off ebay when i lived in the UK.

I got the train 250 miles to pick it up and drive it back home. The engine had no oil pressure and looking back it was a miracle it made it at all. Ended up swapping it out for another engine. It was also rusting everywhere. I spent 3500 pounds on fixing the worst of the rust before coming to aus, then4 weeks before leaving, found that my replacement engone was another lemon, so another 1500 GBP was spent on a new engone and then another 2000 GBP getting it here and complied. So all up, my 'cheap' 970 GBP mini cost me 7000 GBP to get it running here, and even then it's still got rust all over the place and all sorts of other little issues.

I often wonder if i could go back and tell myself not to bother, would I???

Have bought and sold heaps of stuff without problems, but just this weekend I finally got around to plumbing in a 12 volt booster pump to my rain water tank.

Bought the pump new off ebay over a year ago. Bloody pressure switch doesn't work, and the thing just keeps running. Didn't realise until it flattened the battery
My own fault, should have tested it as soon as I got it. Too late now.

This is the problem. You see something and grab it. Put it in the "parts I'm going to use" cupboard. When you finally get time to do, something is wrong. Doesn't fit. Broken. Then it is all too late.
I had this non fitting issue with with one of the $90 Alloy radiators from China. But that was 1 of the almost 100 ebay transaction I've done....

Cheers

I got *kinda* burned with ebay...

I bought the car sight unseen for what I thought was good price, since it was out in the country. Went to pick it up and it was a little more faded and had a couple of dings that weren't in the picture. I think they must have used the pics from when they got it, years ago.

Still, it was driving okay and I'd never driven a mini, so off I went. I've been finding dodgy stuff since the day I got it. I got a stack of receipts that show that around $1k work was done to it months before I got it, and I got it for $4k with a years rego. I figured, if it's got rego, it's gotta be of a certain standard. Knowing what I know now, I'd say it had been sitting for years and someone just got it running to flog it off.

I've been fixing stuff on this car since I got it. Still, miraculously the engine keeps chugging along after I fixed all the leaks one by one, replaced the headgasket that blew 2 days after I got it (plus radiator) and tuned it in bits. It's got a few nice things but nothing special. No mention of dodgy locks in the ad. The dash was some homemade special that was shocking... wasn't that clear in the pics. it was bumping against my knee when I let the clutch out. I removed it and have been dashless since (things kept breaking that were more important).

After all the effort and breakdowns I've had over the last two years (and still have a dumpy car), I can say that I will never buy a car sight unseen again. At least the rust isn't so bad..

hg.
