Hey guys
A little off topic... but the austin america seem's to be a 2 door version of the morris 1100, so was australia ever offered these 2 door version's in the morris/austin range...?

I must admit i don't mind the look of them, and the 68 is taking a little longer than expected......im toying with the idea of 1100 for a daily until the delux is finished, but love the 2 version.... :?

Any information would be appreciated

Cheers Anthony

If Morris 1100 doesn't post a response I suggest you PM him. He's the local wiz on these 'big Minis'.

The Austin America came in both two and four door models. I think they were introduced in about 68 or 69 as a replacement for the MG 1100. They tried to compete against the VW Beetle as a cheap import for the US market. The big problem was the Americans, they can't drive! They can't drive a manual and they didn't know how to use the AP Auto so most Austin Americas died an early death from poor maintenance and poor driving.

The two door ADO-16 shell was introduced in England fairly early on (62 I think) and used for MG, Morris and Austin models.

Australia never got the two door shell. Our cars had to have a very high local content to satisfy the rules of the day. (An Australian Morris 1100 has about 30% more local content than a current Holden Commodore) So to meet the local content with a 2 door would have meant tooling up for more panels and it would not have been economically viable.

They're a fun car to drive. Surprisingly smooth on the road and handle
exceptionally well. You will be accosted by old men and the occasional old girl,
half of Australia must have learned to drive in 'em.

Hiya,

I just bought a 1966 two owner fella.

It's the red one on elevenhundred site under survivors, top left.

Needs a bit of work, but should be fun :D.

I think I will call him Brian.

cheers! jon

I've been watching them closely on ebay for a year now.
You can pick up a pretty good one from about $1000 - $2000.
And a perfect one, often fully restored for less than $5000.

ADO 16 with MG grill would be the choice of them, also the Vanderplas version. If there were any left around that were decent, jump in and drive examples.
