Hi all,

Is there anybody out there that has put BRAKED 10" mini wheels on a trailer??

I was planning on building a new duel axle mini car trailer with brakes and using mini wheels, but I can't seem to get the brakes bit for the front axle :cry:
The rear 'lazy' axle is no problems, but the trailer parts supplier don't make a brake, drum or disk, that will fit in a 10" mini wheel.

Is there anybody out there that has done it or knows where I might get such brake bits to do it myself.

Im pretty sure my dads boat trailer has dual drop axles with 10" rims... not mini rims.. but still 10"

I'll send him an email and find how what the deal is with the brakes

why not just get them off the back of a mini? cable or hydraulic, the bits are all there. My little 5'6" x 3'6" mini based box trailer has mini brakes on it.... but nothing hooked up to them :lol:

I've overheard a few conversations with people having trouble with tyres on car trailers with mini wheels. They're not up to the job weight wise, and when one fails, you can never find a mini tyre. Using falcodore wheels means no matter where you go you can find a tyre for it...

It will be a light trailer made to carry my mini race car.... so weight should be ok and I will normally have at least 6 share tyres with me :lol:

I am a big fan of cable over ride brakes and would love to here of anybody that has tried this with the mini hand brake levers.....

Yes.. intersted to hear.... The 10" boat wheels I have seen all seem to be 5 stud though :roll: never seen a set of brakes behind them..... I could redrill I guess :P

Henry Draper ran hydraulic override brakes using Mini front drums and twin-cylinder type backplates on the front axle of his car trailer.

You could get light truck tyres a few years ago in 10" for trailers, not sure if you still can.

My car trailer which I have had since 1982 has always had 10 inch wheels (Jelly beans) and Mini brakes. You are more than welcome to come and have a look at it if you wish. It has been a great trailer, nice and low tows great and you do not even feel it behind the car. (Land Cruiser Turbo Diesel!). I think it uses rear back plates and brakes and only has brakes on the front Axle. Because it is under 1.02 ton it can have the Hydraulic over ride brakes and is cheap to register too. It has done many long trips even Bris Sydney. Believe it or not I have Light truck tyres on it too, 10 inch to make it legal.

You just need to have a mounting flange welded to the axle to take the standard mini drum back plate, then fit a pair of rear drums.

I have used a tandem trailer that had mini hydrolastic suspension (individually adjustable, not paired). Smooth but unecessary weight. Ran hydraulic drum brakes that didn't work!

Beaten to it by Convertible Mini.

Also be aware that axles supplied to mini stud pattern now usually come with 7/16" (i.e. Holden) studs, so make sure you have a couple of spare wheel nuts in this size.
My own alloy box trailer has these & running moke rims.

I had this trailer for a few weeks but wasn't suited to what we needed.
It simply has a flange on the axle so you can bolt the backing plate onto the axles. The box thingis are "shocks" of an imp as far as memory serves me and it has hydrolic brakes on all 4 wheels. The side panels are are 2.7 metes long for reference and and the trailer is 1.6m wide.

Thanks for posting these pics.

I do believe those axles are hollow with the mini axles welded in the end :shock:

The more I talk about it.. the more I think I will end up with 13" holden......

this pic should give you an idea of how the override looks, the handle above the coupling is the handbrake that is integral to the override, I cant find a pic of the brake action, but if required I can get some photos tomorrow.

You can also get Hydraulic brakes fitted to the trailer with either mechanical override( like mine) or connected back to the car for heavier trailers and vans.

The reason he has Dual 10" Wheels and not single or dual 13" is because the 10's with drop axles allow for a much lower ride height... which in our case, make floating the boat on and off MUCH easier in all conditions. Also means the center of gravity is lower so the ride is more stable :-)
