What does the carbon thing look like, there is an alien thing hanging off the extractor side of the engine, on the passenger side of the car.
Its like a verticle tube, maybe 1.5" in diameter 3" long, and has a smaller pipe coming out of the top of it.

Nope that is the crankcase breather.
The charcoal canister sits up near the fusebox, is round and black with hoses attached to the top.

You said above that it does?.... :?
Or is it not connected to anything?
If it has the breather can, the hose ran to the PCV vacuum port on the side of the SU (originally).

So that would make the one in the garage later than the one in the car, since you said the PCV were only added to late model 998s?

Early ones eg 998 Deluxe didn't have this. Give us the engine number prefixes for both and we'll tell you. Mind you after 35 years things have got shuffled about.
