Thanks Mick. The logic I use in restoring my two MK II S's is to use authentic original parts wherever possible (i.e. aim for concours, if you like). If I scrap the chrome steel bumpers with dents that I have now then I'm helping to reduce the overall supply of genuine parts for future enthusiasts. Naturally cost comes into it so I can't always achieve this aim. The original S extractors are another example. We all know they were made of thin metal and not very robust but if I'm going to return my cars to the state they were in when they left Zetland then that's what I should try to fit.
The list also includes the 14AC alternator and 8TR regulator (even though better, more reliable options are available), the Lukey muffler and exhaust system, Wingard interior light (if it hasn't turned to powder), plug leads, etc.

Sure, I know exactly where you are coming from. My thoughts were more towards the successful completion of an original bumper refurbishment at the first go. I realise however when you are after the n'th degree of fit and finish, then it may take a few repeated attempts or a lot of searching for good base parts to begin with.

I did a Google on Bumper Bar Repairs and found a few hits. For example Carroll Electroplating in Brunswick state the following:

Carroll's has a Repair Service on Bumper Bars / Grilles & Moldings servicing the Vintage or Veteran Car Collector. Over many years Carroll's Electroplating & Metal Polishing has featured on some of Australia's Restored Prestige Automobiles and Motor Bikes. Carroll's can offer advice with most Electroplating or Metal Polishing Projects.

I used these guys for virtually all of my zinc plating last time. Their workshop is really amazing to walk through with all these tubs of crazy chemicals lined with sulfurous and evil looking buildups.

Do you know if they also beat out the dents or are they just platers? I'll contact them to discuss when I'm ready but thought I'd ask since you've been there.

I didn't get the bumpers done there, I bumped and polished the stainless bumpers I have myself. I did get a quote however for a pair of bumpers to be smoothed and polished commercially (by a bumper specialist over sunshine way I think) at around 350-400 mark, but cannot remember for the life of me if that was one or two..

However, that spurred me on to get a polishing wheel attachment for the bench grinder and do it myself given mine are stainless. I did the whole car's stainless trims that way. Window trims, door and pocket trims, etc etc. Hard yakka, but the resto dollar meter goes in reverse when you have a scratch at it yourself. I didn't have to plate the metal however which was a big bonus.

the stainless ones are the same as the chrome cheapy ones, you have to bend the mounting points a bit on the back, no big deal really but its one to be careful of if you have really nice paint.

the stainless bumpers have a very dull finish, its not terrible but i would have to recommend the chrome ones because of it.

like others have said original ones are the best if you can find them in good condition. But its almost impossible.

I had both my clubby bumpers straightened and rechromed and they have been on the car 3 Years now and they are still fantastic.
