Is there a difference in the temp senders supplied for minis?

Mine currently has a red plastic insulator but I find that the temp guage sits just under the hot line, and believe me it isn't getting that hot. I've seen pictures on website of ones with black insulators stating that they fit all Australian Minis, but then again I've seen the same info about the red ones too. My dash is the 3 guage Clubman dash (technically 4, but you know what I mean). So peoples.... Which do I need, or have I got a different problem like the voltae stabilizer being naff?

Sounds like you may have an 88 deg thermostat fitted.

There are actually 2 different senders, the other has a green insulator. The Red one you have is compatable with an 82 deg thermostat, and I think - not 100% sure - the green one is for 88 deg thermostat. They only seem to sell the red ones here.

<EDIT> Just checked, there are actually 3 different senders. I suspect the one you have is the GTR101 and you may need the GTR143. The other one goes under P/N GTR185.

How does the thermostat affect the temp sender? Or am I missing something here?

The GTR185 is definately the wrong part (different connector)

I'm pretty sure I had this exact same problem back in the 90's I got a temp sender from Repco and it did the same thing and I'm sure it had a red isolator.

Looks like I need to find a GTR143 and try it.

Yeah I'm wondering this too.

They are 'calibrated' so that for each different thermostat temp (eg 82 or 88 or whatever) the needle of the gauge will sit on normal.

<EDIT> Just to be sure there is no other problem, check with a decent capillary gauge too.

I found no temp gauge reading difference going from a recent red sender to an old black one.
Gauge is the stock MiniMatic/Mini-K `C-H' variety.

In the UK they fitted the GTR101 (Red these days, but I'm pretty sure the early ones were black) up to 1975, along with 82 deg thermostat. From 75 on, 88 deg thermostats were fitted along with the GTR143 sender (which I think is green). I don't know much at all about the GTR185. All these senders were screwed in to the cylinder head.

I dont get it. When my engine is hotter i want to know how hot. and also know how close to the bad end of the scale I am. Or does it still have the same redline?

OK. Depending on which sender you fit, the middle 'normal' will either be 82 degrees (GTR101) or 88 degrees (GTR143). I suspect that fitting the GTR143 will also push up the temp indicated by the red zone, however keep in mind that these are far from a calibrated lab instrument and are really only there to say 'I'm OK' or 'I'm NOT OK', just a little better then the red light they fitted in to base model holdens and the original temp gauges as factory fitted in to the Mini Deluxe and Mokes.

Maybe then you should fit the full scale temp gauge with capilliary type sender unit. As GT says, the std. gauges are not exactly precision instruments. (C-N-H)

TEMP TRANSMITTER 59-63 when no gauges or volt stabiliser GTR102
