Hi

so i have never done this before, i have a new head to put on soon.

i have the tools to do it & a new head gasket kit.

i could get my mechanic to do it but it is more of a personnel thing
then the money wanting to do it/know how.

Do you think i should give it a go? i have a manual also

is it very difficult in the car to do? is there alot to stuff up really?
i watched the mini addicts video he makes
it looks easy :)

very basic fix. If you have head off worth while doing a couple of extra things. Check head if true (my advice have it skimmed if in doubt at all) replace stem seals cost only a few bucks. You dont need a spring compressor can be done with a ring spanner, something under the valve to stop it compressing into the chamber and a bit of muscle. Always worth lapping the valves and de-coking while you are there. PS tip make sure you drain coolant first and do it from either the radiator or bottom hose. If you get stuck ask.

i have a new turbo head going on & my car has only done 10k

so i assume i can ignore most of that?

will do :D how long does it take 3hrs?

Yeah go for it NG, it is not too hard of a job,if your unsure whether you'll remember where certain bits & pieces go , take some photos first. First thing that i would do before anything is to flush the old coolant out of the system with fresh water , that way you will be able to refill with fresh coolant /inhibitor and then that part of the system will right.
Next i'd jack it up and put the car on 4 safety stands ( make sure that it is stable,
check , check & double check this part, you don't want any accidents with it falling off a stand ). The reason i say to put it on stands is that it is a lot easier on your back when your working on the engine for extended periods of time. As Low'n blown said make sure you drain all the water / coolant as it makes the job easier, less messy.
Once that is done it is only a matter of pulling it apart, start from the top and work your way down, take your time and it'll be all sweet, if you run into any dramas, ask, someone here will be able to help.

It's easy to do. I just took mine off then, in total took about twenty minutes including beer drinking. I don't lean over the car much as I am tall enough to kneel in front of it and reach.. Read the workshop manual paying extra attention to the tightening down sequence, make sure all the threads on the studs/bolts are clean and you should be good. Check the bypass hose, if it looks even the slightest bit manky, just replace it, easy to do when you have the head off. Replace all the thermostat housing gaskets and the gasket that goes under where the heater hose connects.

What head gasket did you get??

yep have to agree with the above if you a head to do a straight swap. I bet you forget about the bypass hose. When fitting the head back on Don't forget about the bypass hose once again and if you have the ribbed one..toss it and just cut a piece off the Heater hose. Clean all the gasket areas including the thermostate. head & Rocker nuts & studs as per above. Keep the car up on the stands and gap the rockers..not forgetting to take the plugs out which makes it easier

just make sure you dont pull the cam followers out when you pull the pushrods up.

get a sheet of cardboard and punch 8 holes in it, number them and then drop the pushrods in the hole so you can easily put them back in the place they came from.

you can do the same for the nuts and washers, but not really necessary.

you can do it

yep as gaf said do not use ribbed bypass hose

and if yuor cam followers / tappets do come out just take the side plates off and put them back very easy job

i just finished mine and the only trouble i have encountered is that stupid flexy bypass hose i just cannot seem to push it far enough up onto the head

but al in all very simple just follow the book and if you hasve a q just ask to easy :D

Good idea.
Don't forget you will need to readjust the rockers after assembly, even if it's the same head going back on with the pushrods in the same holes.

ok thanks guys.

i will give it a go.

i have a bk450 kit & i will not be running a bypass on this new head.

yep i know about push rods and numbering them on some card?


yes i have new rockers full roller Titan rockers 1.3 going on as well, should be fun, if i can't set them ill get my mechanic over to help he is pretty cool like that.

as i said i would like to do this my self, much more rewarding :D

i have done it in the car before replaced bypass well forgot lol.. it's a joke!
