As the title says I have a long term dream to take my moke to NZ and travel around that great country for a month or 2 and then bring my moke back to Aus, this probably wont
happen for 5 to 10 years but hopefully it will happen.

So what is involved in send my car to NZ and bringing it back, I guess it is a different process to exporting or importing a car like 'roundie' and 'minimaleffort' are / have done
I did google it a while ago and got a couple of different methods, one which seemed cost a lot.

Leo Mack from the UK sent his moke to Aus for the 2006 Moke Muster and I think it only cost about $2000 each way, surely it wouldn't cost that much to NZ.

And does anyone know if there was a group of mokes going would that make it cheaper, could we fill a 20' or 40' container with mokes or even minis and ship them over
and back?

They send cars over for NZ targa so it can be done.

You organize a "carnet de passage" through your AA or similar. That allows you to drive your roadworthy car here for a year without paying duty or anything. It is a document that allows you to bring a vehicle in, use it for a year and take it out. I think sometimes a bond is required so that you don't sell it and do a runner. With this document done, your Aussie rego etc is all that is required, so far as I know.

flat packed like from the factory!! :D

or emptied of fluids and chained by the nose from the roof 8)

Moe that would be a lot of fun. I did the campervan thing over there a few years ago and spent most of the time saying to myself "I wish I was in the Moke".

I assume thats for 1 Moke Brett?, How much would a 40' shipping container cost? You'd get 3 in a forty footer easy, 4 with a little more trouble, 6 in two layers and maybe 9 if you really went to town.

Yeah, that price was for one Corona Coupe - RO-RO ($2K) or in a 20 footer ($3K). Go RO-RO in a Moke or with several in a container and the price should come down. Personally I wouldn't want to risk RO-RO with a Moke, as they are too vulnerable to being shunted or forked into a corner to fill space.

Even two Mokes in a 20 footer wouldn't be a problem with a couple of bumpers removed.

Not sure I like the idea of stacking them though. But I can't see why you couldn't sling some Mokes from the roof...

You'd build a frame using dunnage (of pine treated for pests to keep the quarantine guys happy) and package the mokes up in a crate-like arrangement, with fork pockets underneath. Each one would get its own box and they'd stack with the lower one taking the weight of the one(s) above.

I met a group of Kiwi classic bike ownerstouring Tassie a few years ago. They'd done exactly that in a 20 footer, although one guy complained that they had to lower the handlebars to get the second layer in.

Thanks for the imput guys, the carnet is the expensive way :( Why does Aus & NZ have that system, must beto stop Kiwi's hiding in the boot to get to Aus :D

maybe I could build a steel frame to support 2 layers of Mokes in a container
even have some ramps to help load/unload.

Thanks for the offer kiwiinwgtn, are you in the freight game or just willing to help?

Apart from the Carnet I wonder what the freight costs for a 20' or 40' container.

They don't need to hide in the boot. See how low the fares are to/from NZ lately? :lol:

Yes, I reckon it's silly that we can move freely between the two countries at will, unless we want to take our cars. :?

Freight any where in the world is exspensive these days, and with all of the issues 9/11 caused, Bio security issues that both countries have they have got every base covered.
which means it costs lots..

No just offering to make a few calls if you want any info from our authorties..

I would love a Moke hence the toungue and cheek.

It's like a passport for your car. It gets stamped as you enter and exit borders.

To get one you have to place a deposit for the max import duty of the countries you will be driving to. eg: If the import duty is 200%, you have to deposit 200% of the car's value. If you sell the car while travelling, or it conveniently disappears, then that country can claim the import duty from the carnet deposit. If you write it off, or you car is stolen it gets complicated....

You can also pay for insurance that will cover you for the carnet amount if the car disappears.

Once the car returns to Aus, you get your deposit back!

I think it's silly that an Aussie registered car does not need a carnet to enter the EU, but an EU registered car needs a carnet to enter Aus. How is that fair??
