Driving home from work today,

Lost power, couldn't do more then about 40k's and it sounds like the car is backfiring through the carby at revs.

It did something similar a few weeks back, and i don't know what i did to fix it tbh... i just took all the leads off and found the choke jammed on, and the accelerator cable real tight (I had played with the mounting for the springs though) but this time there all sweet, and I'm at a total loss.

It did drive into work fine this morning, nothing strange no strange noises...

The internetz is suggesting blown head gasket? but Im hoping someone could shed a little more light...

Cheers

Could be the head, mine has popped and had really low power with a blown head, a compression test would be a good idea.

Tombo..

Obvious question but did you pull the spark leads again and put them on in the wrong order (hard to imagine doing that if the car drove fine this morning). Switching two leads will do this to your car.

Have you checked timing? Or condition of the plugs?

Check a few things

- Check the leads are in the right order.
- Check the dizzy isn't loose.
- Check that all cylinders have spark.
- Check all the spark plugs.

Something like this happened to me once, ending up being the dizzy turned around a bit. Took forever to find it. Just happened all of a sudden

So check timing

something like that happened on Dad's car a while ago, he rang and said "it's running funny", I said "your distributor has come loose, go and put it back where it was and tighten up the bolt". He went and looked at the dizzy, sure enough...
