Hey just recently had the secure underground carport where I live broken into. Mini wasn't stolen but they got inside the car and nicked some stuff I had in there not much though.

There was no apparent damage but it appears to me that they molestered the barrel in the handle I think they've jammed a smallish screwdriver into it and belted it. The gasket behind the handle is split and the door won't lock. I can turn the barrel into the locking posiion but it won't lock.

I'm guessing I can replace the barrel and it may lock again what do u think?

Hey Fiji,

I'm no expert ( !), and someone please correct me if i'm wrong (there's a good chance of that!) but the barrel, and there's a little 'locking plunger' thingy that could be the problem. i think the end of the barrel joins into that, and makes it turn, to lock.
I posted a pic with exploded view of door lock bits here i while back, can dig it up if needed.

I only know about these bits coz mine caused me heaps of grief when i had to put them back in! Now i have to pul the barrell back out, coz the monkey that cut the keys got it wrong  !

I think Humans are a better option and they are less likely to throw poo when you complain

It makes sense to me the barrel would be rooted . Right hand handles are expensive so that's what I'm hoping

i hate thieves. Ive had my car broken into five times now since ive been in Alice. They cost me a window, door locks, and my ignition shows signs of being screwdrivered.

Sorry to hear it. Those thieves just a mob of rotten carnts.

replacing the barrel is straightforward, but remove the whole assembly means taking most of the door apart unfortunately. Split gasket indicates they must have used a lot of force

I love living in rural Tassie - I don't even take the keys out of the car...

What type of lock is it? Since you say it's on the handle, I suppose it's not a clubman barrel. I know that the clubman barrel has a clip that holds it up against the door. When I got the mini, the barrels didn't have any gaskets and they didn't lock properly, because the gasket actually held the barrel in place. Without, the barrel would turn in the hole, and it wouldn't actually lock. Sounds like a similar problem.

I just made a new seal out of a bit of tire inner-tube, because I'm a cheapskate and didn't want to buy new ones.
