LUCAS THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS

at least lucas has trained many" apprentice auto electricians" that owned minis. Just think if it was not lucas you would not have these crazy problems and you would not lear anything.

the ign switch is catus.

Clue is that in the "ACC" position you say everything works - including spark.

Spark should not be available when the key is in this position. I'd be double checking all the wiring around the switch and if everything looks OK then try another switch.

Did you order a multimeter also?

ACC should never have a spark, its there so you dont have power to your coil when your standing still and want to your radio for instance.

IGN lets the coil go live so that as the motor runs the dizzy can get a charge.

you turn it one further to crank over the starter.

Good man.

Do these checks:

Hanra wrote:
Check to see if you have approx 12v at the + of the IGN coil when the key is set to on (make sure the points are OPEN). Do you have a Ballast resistor fitted? Confirm that you have approx 12v at the + side of the coil when cranking the starter over.

when you get your multi meter get a set of leads with the little clips on the end instead of a probe. These are very handy when doing the checks by yourself as one end can be conneted to power with out holding the probe.
Also get a circuit diagram for the model and as you test each item make a note on the test and result. Saves re-doing when you forget after checking things and circuits.
besides just checking for power a good idea is to check the conductivity of the crcuit using the "OHM" on your meter. handy for bad earth connections
