I am in the last stretch of getting the engine running again. I am having difficulties setting the tappet clearance though. Have read gafmo's guide in the how to section.

My problem is when I try to get the crank moving by having it in 4th and pushing, I just can't push it, it won't budge easily or at all.
Before you ask I did not have the handbrake on and it moves freely in neutral, spark plugs are out also.

Any hints?

Cheers

Push harder? Your really just trying to rock the car not push it.

Maybe crank it over a few times to get some oil around it?

You say "getting engine running again" have you done something to the engine which may have seized it? Try turning the flywheel or the front pulley. If the crankshaft turns, then do as Hanra suggested, push harder.

Handbrake wont make a difference, only works on rear wheels. If you are near the rear wheels during any of this process you are doing it wrong.

Is the front of the car jacked up ?
Having it in fourth gear means you need to turn the wheel of the car while the front is off the ground

You won't be moving anything with 4th engaged and the wheels on the ground.

I can't believe u all do it that way!! Just turn the motor over from the engine bay with a spanner.. U don't have to keep moving around then, and you can see when the motor is in the correct spot!

err...

if you have the front of the car off the ground, you have to turn BOTH front wheels... try doing that on your own! :P

and yes, you can push the car in fourth, just rock it a bit to build up some momentum. take plugs out too should make it easier.
