I have a high compression 1310 and sometimes when it sops it is hard to start again becuase the starter motor does not turn over very fast. when the engine is cold and there is no oil pressure the engine turns over fast.

Can the standard starter motors handle higher compression? or is it more likely my battery.

thanks

New battery or at least get your tested and fit a gemini starter motor

Sounds like you could possibly have a timing issue when hot, check all leads, terminals
and earths to make sure they're clean & tight as these are the easiest things to look at first ,re-check your timing to be sure and maybe if your unsure of the battrey try another one. It's all a process of elimination, but start with the cheap and easiest things first as it could be a simple fix.

Also it is handy to have your location too as there could be someone closeby that might be able to help you.

Thanks everyone for your help, dam sopping cars.....

it only stops when I come to a stop when stopping at traffic lights ect. If I brake then put my foot on the clutch the come to the stop it will sometimes konk out.

If I keep the revs up then continually give if it a few revs when I think it is going to stop it is fine. Once it has settled down it idles nicely.

I am in SA.

Will a multimeter be able to tell me the health of my battery? if so what sort of readings am I looking for?

Thanks

ahh ok your engine stalls when driving, now thats a different issue all together. Ignition timing is now starting to look like it needs attention, also check your carby adjustment

I dont have a booster....

I can live with it if I know the car will start again.

Is there a thread on fitting a gemini starter?

also what sorting of readings will I be looking for from a multimeter to test my battery?

thanks for your help everyone.

around 12v normally and up around 14v when the car is running -give or take 0.5v.

the fact it cranks fine cold and not so much when warm would make me suggest its a timing and/or carby issue. whens the last time your carby had a kit put through it? and are there any air leaks between the inlet manifold and the head? whats your timing set at?

12.5 volts when the engine isn't running, ~14 volts when it is running, but the battery's ability to hold & maintain charge can't be tested with a multimeter

try a known good battery out of another car, or go to a battery shop/auto elec and ask for them to test it. They'll do it for nothing if there's a chance they'll make some money out of you

even most supercheap/repco stores will have a battery tester.

they will run a charge into the battery and see how quickly it dissipates. cant be done with a multimeter, its a specific tool for testing.
