I am talking about roundnoses not clubmans that already come with a built in tacho.

Just interested to see what people have and how they mount them?

Are all Smiths tacho's badly dampenned? (needle whobble around at speed) or are some of the newer smiths ones actually quite good?

I am tempted to splash out on one in a chrome pod and mount it to the indicator cowl for that period british look and want to know what others are doing. I wonder if the Minispares TIM ones are any good? thoughts?

Note: Drmini doesn't need to answer as I have his exact tacho and mounting solution!

I have a 6.5 inch monster right in the middle of the dash, and a 5.5 inch speedo on the column.


Later smiths stuff is dampened pretty well, it's mainly 60s and 70s stuff that isn't.

This is my set up

being an 850 i was trying to keep it all period looking

Have a newer Smiths Tacho (electronic I think), works well.

Mounted using the two bolts that hold the column bracket

Used a flat piece of Aluminium, drilled two holes to align with the two thumbscrew bolts normally used for the U-bracket, cut a hole for the socket to fit thru.

Painted the bracket and the back or the tacho matt black to help hide it.

Bottom of the tacho rests on the edge of the dash shelf so it doesn't shake around.

Depending if you have a steering wheel drop bracket or your seating position it might be slightly out of view so test position first.

I took my old Smiths tacho to Howard Instruments (mini racer) and had it converted to electronic so it is more stabble and works with my 123 ignition but also still works on a standard dizzy.

Heres mine,

Smiths Gauge. It wobbles a bit when accelerating but I like the classic look. Connected via a vertical mount that is covered by a circular bit of rubber which also hides the cables.

Mine is a 4" Smiths tacho from an MGB, which perfectly matches the other gauges in colour, typeface, bezel, etc -- like it was made for the car. It's even redlined where I want it

It's an RVI type (current-sensing, and originally pretty inaccurate) but like Flute I've had mine converted to electronic by Howard Instruments, so it's now responsive, stable and accurately calibrated.

I have it mounted on the steering column so it's 100% visible from my driving position, but it's not pretty at the moment being held on with an aluminium bracket and hose clamp.

You can't get chrome buckets in 4" to fit this tacho as it was originally a panel fit, but I have managed to find a stainless camping mug/billy which fits perfectly and looks great, but I've not got around to fitting it yet.

This is i nthe new one which jsut rolled up in the garage.
Dampening problems on either of my cars with old smiths tachs?? Not really anything I have a problem with.. The components are just old, that is all...New caps and resistors and germanium transistor and all is good...or you can spend $110 and get an electronic module which as a handy little side benefit even makes the tacho accurate..
