I'm considering getting a set of Classic Cobra Seats and I'm interested peoples opinions and experiences.

Comfort,

I assume they are better than the standard seat esp. laterally but one of my options is to get my standard seats repacked (I've already replaced the rtubber diaphram and still seem to sink too low). How do they compare to a newly restored standard seat?

Safety,

I'm prepared to pay the extra for the headrests if they actually go high enough to act as head restraints during an accident, are they height adjustable and to they go up enough to prevent neck injury.

Also, and I realise this is a matter of taste/opinion, but my car has the original Mk1 red interior and carpet, so should I go with the red piping or stick with plain black. I think I'd be taking to big a risk to actually get them in red, It looks to be a much brighter red. Has anyone seen a red Cobra seat?

Is it worth getting from OS? Also if poeple have good or bad experiences getting these seats from here or OS please PM me.

Thanks

Whatdya know. I just bought myself a pair 2 weeks ago so I am the very person you need to speak to about this topic!

Firsatly no need to import them from England and pay a hefty postage cost. Just give Revolution Racegear a call and they can deliver to your door or go and pick them up for pretty good prices. Minisport in SA also sells the package including subgframes. PM me for the Revolution prices.

Secondly there are 2 types, Cobra Classic and Cobra Cub seats. The cub seats are for people with wider bums. They aren't as supportive and IMO are no better than std seats except that but both seats can be set up to sit lower than stock seats (by miles) and they are more comfortable as you're not sitting up right. The cub seats are also much more expensive. The newer Classics are the best. "Newer" in that the slightly older models had softer seat cussions which sit higher. The newer seats are firmer but still supportive.

For me the classics are very very comfy. Miles better than stock seats which were giving me a bad back and more comfy even than the Cobra Clubman seats that I used to have as the padding is abit newer and there's more of it. I find the classics give me the optimum seating position in the car. Nice and low with enough leg room the reach the pedals and not "perched up" like a stock seat which was giving me a bad back after a short drive.

Regarding the headrests, I think 1) they look crappy, 2) won't save your neck on a heavy rear end impact, esp if you are a tall person as they only reach up to the top of my neck which means my head can still whip back above them and 3) may interfere with rear access as the headrests hit the roof.

To me the non headrest version looks the best. Nice and period looking. I reckon the headrests look like afterthoughts rather than designed to look like they fit...

I got all black ones even though I do have red interior highlights. I think the red piping does look hot on black but I am not prepared to pay extra for that. No idea about all red seats. Either way they look a $million once installed...

Lastly the cobra subframes: to set them up so that they sit nice and low they need some modifications. the hole that you want it to sit on is the very top one closest to the frame. But in order to do that, the bracket gets in the way so with a angle grinder, just lop off the 3rd hole and keep holes 1/2. I find that mounting them to the middle hole on a std seat bracket and pulling the seat right back gives the best seating postion (this includes a steering wheel lowering bracket.)

IMO best interior upgrade I've made in 7 years!!!

Any questions just ask!

I believe the Cubs are narrower not wider, they were made for sports cars originally.
I have the black Classics with red piping, and they look good.
Mine have no headrests, I prefer them this way.
I got mine with subframes from Brickworx when he was into Minis (they came out of a Jap Rover). They tilt forward for rear access.

Yes we are both right, what I mean is they are narrower but the side bum supports are not as high so can fit a wider bum comfortably. If you're a skinny bloke, get the classics.

The Cobra seats are quite good, but don't overlook a set of late 'sports' style Genuine Rover Seats. While (as I have said here ^) the Cobra Seats are comfortable, the Rover Seats are way better again - and they just bolt staight in and being a factory item, no issues with engineers, roadworthys and insurance.

Cobra Classics bolt straight in too.

I love my set of plain black.

Lillie is right, for the optimum position you need to cut of the bottom hole of the subframe (which I'm yet to do).

Headrests are too low and look silly I think. Your a fairly tall guy so I guess they will be useless for you.

If you want to have another look at mine before you buy, just let me know.

Cobras bolt straight in too. The modifications are for a lower (and hence hoonier) ride height. Insurance? Roadworthy? There are no ADR's concerning seats for cars pre 1970 AFAIK. Keep yer old seats, takes 30 secs to change them back. I am sure Cobras are easier to source than s/h Rover genuines...

PS. You cannot tell me that this:

Looks sexier than this:

I have cobra classics with no head rest. I am very happy with them.
yes late models nice and comfy too but I find them not proportional with the car(this is entirely my opinion). At the end of the day comes down to your personal taste I spouse. Good luck with your choice.

Yes, with a seat subframe for a mini, but they are not a factory seat.

How else are you going to bolt them in? Unless you just bolt them directly to floor, but then you'd never see over the steering wheel. Basically if you are going to buy cobra classics, you buy them with one of the many available styles of subframes or make your own. Either way they bolt straight in.

GT Mowog, stop hijacking the thread. OP is not asking about s/h rover seats, give it up already! Don't care if they are original for your ass, he's not interested golly. Just relead your posts...

Errr....sorry here Ryan, you've quite missed the point...............

Saas, Recaro, Sparco, Corbeau and several others 'just bolt straight in' too, but they ain't factory seats. So if you don't have an engineering approval, it could be interesting when say, your stopped at the traffic lights waiting for a green light and you get rammed up the arse. I'm fairly sure that the seats would do what they have to, no issues there, but the ensuring police and insurance investigation might prove quite interesting and maybe even enlightening for you......

You're making a totally new thread arguing schemantics of subframes when the original poster is asking about COBRA CLASSIC SEATS
