Okay, I'm positive that this has been asked a billion times before, so one more time wont hurt.
Can you do an EFI conversion on a mini engine?
If so, is there a link for the previously discussed topic?
I dont want to put an EFI motor into my mini, just convert my engine to EFI.
Any help would be great!

It's been done before. Using rover parts you could do it easily.
Biggest problem is the siamese head on the engine, if you change it to an 8 port then the converision is simple and will result in good power and economy.

you could look at an aftermarket computer setup such as a haltech or a motec.

might be easier to source rover computer and jets etc, already setup.

haltec will allow you to do so much more, including computer displays within the car.

[EDIT] Link http://www.haltech.com/

Rovers still had 5 port heads. An 8 port just makes it easier for a scratch built conversion.

If you want HP use a 7 or 8 port head (both of which have 4 inlet ports) and a proper MPI setup.
There are serious problems in getting big HP with EFI on a 5 port head, due to the fact the intake strokes of cylinders 1-2 and 3-4 overlap each other.

You could go this far.

Have a look at this, http://www.canems.co.uk/siameseports.phpthey seem to have solved the problems of fitting effective EFI to a 5 port head.

THere is a long-winded explanation here:

http://www.starchak.ca/efi/siamese.htm

I had a long, long think about it and did lots of spreadsheeting to work out what may work. Wrote about it here some time back.

2 ways to make it work (well with little mixture differential):

1] make the intake charge a constant mix of air and fuel, like a carby. Best done with a single injector with large pulse width (ie. not very large capacity). Put the injector a long way from the ports. How about that, Rover single point.

2] port inject it with an EFI system that has sequential firing, so you need a cam angle sensor, not just crank. Set up the EFI with pulse timing offsets so that you minimise the fuel being supplied during the overlap period when two valves on the one runner are open.

I had a 4 injector set-up with 2 runners but my lack of fabrication skills made it a bit rough and my lack of funds at teh time meant I couldn't get a computer with the right specs, or afford tuning time.

As said above, a cross-flow head with a cheapo EFI system will be heaps easier and more successful. Try one of those Pierce heads with weber replacement efi and you're laughing.

M

Would it make a difference if I pointed out that it is a 998? :D
Just researching something cheap and simple for a BIGGER scale end product.

I spouse we all have different view and taste on our cars but if you after HP and have 998 why not swap with an 1275. I had 998 Rover and last year I bought an 1275 out of a 97 model rover and get rid of all EFI. Running a carby now. Noticeable power difference between them.

The efi is only part of the equation that I'm looking at. :D
I'm not even considering the HP gain from the EFI. Bigger things in mind. 8)

my 998 engine is EFI, but far from beeing a stock engine.
running much better than with a carb and dizzy.
just using the Rover SPi intake and exhaust manifold and custom wiring loom.

i don't think going MPi with the 5 port is worth the trouble (if it isn't factory fitted). better use 4 inlet ports
