hey.

i got some gears in a spare Rover gearbox they are in good condition but the
case hardening where the synchro ring sits on has worn down.

on 1,2,3 & 4th gear. there is no groove in the case hardening it's just all kinda gone.

the synchro rings are not really grabbing if you get me like my other gears?

can you get the case hardening re done & return it to Oem strength?

or are the gears scrap? should i buy some new ones?

if you can fix them what would i need to tell the heat treaters..

would you really bother honestly?

These do wear but take a LONG time to do so. Normally the Baulk ring will wear so much faster. The cone on the gears don't have a groove in them. Test them for wear with a new baulk ring. I would strongly recommend genuine baulk rings.

When fitted up by hand, there should be about 0.035" or more clearance between the back of the baulk ring and the dog teeth on the gear. 0.030" is the minimum acceptable limit.

Gee, it must have had a hard life! or crappy oil.

And you say this is every gear?

For the effort, replacement gears.

anything is possible i would go for the cheapest option considering the outcome (a strong gearbox ) is going to be achieved either way

If the cone tapers are worn that bad I bet the gear teeth faces are too.
I'd be looking for some gears...

It can be done, I had a MK 1 S 1st motion shaft remetalised in early 90's, had to send the new synchro cone with the gear to get the taper correct. Not been a problem since. For garden variety gears that are still available new, would have to question the worth.

Yes, they can be repaired, there is a factory proceedure for doing it (I've never done it) however the cones have been NLA as a seperate spare for over 25 years. The Gearbox Factory can recondition yours, take about 2 weeks and cost about the same money as your entire gearbox (I did have cause to get a quote recently to salvage a NLA gear).

New gears are still available or get in touch with Josh at Mini Imports, I'm sure he could look after you.

Did you use a genuine baulk ring to test with?

<EDIT> The Gearbox Factory can also make undersize Baulk Rings. No idea of cost though.

If buying baulk rings take a good or new gear and try the fit.
Not all baulk rings are created equal- I have a collection of oval and wrong tapered brand new ones.
Rover packaged ones are best if you can find em.

where can i get a full set of helical gears, ive looked everywhere for a new second gear, checked all the sites in the uk, even minisport.co.uk has every gear listed except second gear.

id really like to purchase a full set of the four gears new, and maybe the reverse gear too.

You haven't looked here. I've got a few NEW 2nd gears, however be aware that there are 3 different types of All Synchro 2nd gears. Do you know what gear set you have?

The gears I have are P/N 22G1094 (26 teeth - course)
