I've done a search but some old photos have been deleted. Can someone kindly post photos of where the seat belt anchor points are in the rear seats? some good close up pics of where abouts on the wheel arches, where on the parcel shelf and where on rear firewall to hold the buckle.

Im not sure if you are going to be fitting rear belts into mini's that didnt come with them?

But if you are you need to have them engineered/certified for it to be legal.

But im also not sure if this is the case in the states/territories that you live in.

But is in NSW

By the sounds of it they were going to be bolting in seatbelts that didnt have mounting points, so if they were optional in the 60's they would have been fitted by the dealer or there wasnt a law applicable to rule against it.

But dad had some in his mini and the lad that was doing the blueslip said he would have to pull them out because they were not engineered.

What about all the cars back in the 60's that had them fitted by the local service station mechanic, things like EH Holdens etc where the mechanic drilled through the B pillar to mount front ones, bet they were not engineered, maybe there are dates as to when engineering was required.
The last 4 Mini's we have had have all had retro fitted rear belts, and never bothered with engineers certificates. And all have gone through Victorian RWC and regos without a query. An interesting question though.

Anyway I agree with Drewie and others. I don't understand the logic. So if I fail rego, I take them off and I pass? doesn't make sense

Cop pulls over and says, those seatbelts engineered? Erm why no. That's illegal. Err ok, unbuckle seatbelt. Is that better officer? Now it's legal as my mini never came with seatbelts in the first place

Victoria may be different to other states but have just been having a look around the VicRoads web site.

One sections says vehicle manufactured before 1/1/69 do not require seat belts but says: "If seat belts have been fitted it is recommended they be retained". No mention of engineers certificates.

Another area discusses fitting additional belts and it gives recommendations as to where to drill, spacing and mounting etc, and once again no reference to engineeers certificates.

Similar rules in NSW. (believe it or not)

The reason for requiring engineering approval of retrofitted seat belts is not to protect you, the current owner.. but the next guy who owns the car.

If you fit them improperly or without approval, you know that the belts are substandard and not as safe in an accident as an approved installation. The poor schmuck who comes later doesn't, and little Johnny's child seat comes loose in a shunt and it's not pretty.

This is the same for any major or safety-related modification, all of which require engineering sign-off.
