Hi,
As Hanra pointed out, I don't think early cars had overiders, weren't they 1960 and on?

If it was 59/60 it would have the full front valance. But from the pictures it looks to have the side cutouts for brake cooling, which would make it later than that.

It could just be the photo though???

Thats how it looks to me

it has to be before august 1962 because the uk started using letters first XXX111 after august, this plate has numbers first 111XXX.

im still trying to get info from freind in uk regarding what XMT means, the first letter usually defines the area it was registered in.

when they went letters first, the first letter meant the year so A is 1963, b is 1964 and so on. the second two letters for instance YY means london. the three numbers are random.

from what i find online, 6 digit numbers first started in 1953

Number plates in the UK from 1932 to 1963 ran originally as ABC123, then from the 50's as numbers started to run out, some busier areas adopted the reverse system, so 123ABC (as per this car 230XMT) Post 63 they became ABC123A, with the A indicating the year.

There were references to the area of registrations, which used to be done by head Post Offices until the full formation of the DVLC (Driver and Vehicle Licenmsing Agency).

The latter two letters indicate the area, in this case MT was London NE.

So we now know it was a pre 63 car first registered in NE London. Stewart and Ardern were one of the bigger BMC Dealers in London and the South and they sold a huge number of Mini's and Mini'Coopers. Often Cars were sent to S & A from the factories, then distributed to lesser dealers from there. The Heritage certificates of these cars would all show S & A as delivery dealer, but often not actually sold by S & A.

Hmnn difficult to say, but looks like it does have a full front panel to me!

Photo is dark though.

Also, the white grill was a feature of early cars, deluxe models had the overiders! :P

I reckon I can only make out a single fixing on the front sliding window catch, early 59/60 cars only had one hole in the glass, but the catches used to come loose and swivel, later glass had two holes the upper with the fastener and the lower locating the fastener and preventing it turning,

We will see!

Yeah, looked like a full panel to me too but can't be sure.

I'm not sure when overriders appeared and De Luxe models but I don't think they were on the really early cars.

XM we think means London County, the three digits are probably the number of registrations in that county. London County is probably the outlying areas of Greater London.

not sure what the T means or whether it is just random.

so this car was registered in London Country previous to August 1962.

Not sure if this is correct, ive been advised that they were still only 6 digit numbers with the first letter being the year.

this may have changed as they ran out of registration numbers.

2001 is when the new scheme started

http://www.londonbusroutes.net/miscellaneous/regs.htm

i found this this morning, it has a chart lower down which explains the letterings its says MX is MiddleSex, which makes sense, and this is in Londons South, and if they dealer is there, this also makes sense.

My 1964 Mini Cooper S Registration CRX550B:
Image

Fully imported (by Me) I have all the logbooks back to 1964 and a copy of the Post Office Book Entry for the registration!

Like the works cars it was registered in Abingdon (Berkshire) RX, see the second list here:

http://www.motorcycle.co.uk/Reference-m ... tters.aspx

This list would also indicate that this second older list suggests Middlesex for MT, our "Mystery Car!"
