Ok, This is one of those afraid to ask situations.

Cars been going great, no strange noises etc.

Was doing a regular oil change today and when i went to put the sump-plug back in saw something in the hole.

Using a pair of tweezers this is what came out.

I'm assuming its a gearbox component.

What is it and what should be my next step?

Lucky find!

That's the retaining clip for the outer of the outgigger bearing in the transfer housing. I'm inclinded to say not to worry (it's better out than float about!) as the outer shells are pressed in and the name 'retaining clip' really is quite a misnomer and I cannot see the bearing outer ring coming out and even if it did, it cannot go far.

Having said the above, have you any idea how many times this bearing may have been replaced?

Just going on receipts I have it seems a secondhand gearbox (recon I assume) was fitted in 2002 and

AAU8424 <A> BEARING - OUTRIGGER - MINI $42.57

....is listed among in the parts list.

GT m is right there's no need for concern now it's out. It mustn't have been located in the groove properly.

It had to make it past the bottom drop gear, then round a corner and through a hole to get to the sump plug. Bloody miracle it made it out alive!

Yes, it is yet another mini miracle. Thinking a little more about it, I am a little curious as to why it come out. Again I wouldn't loose sleep.......

Maybe when the bloke was fitting the clip to the housing it sprung out of his grip and flew away never to be seen again. (till today!)
So he grabbed another and fitted it thinking that he would find the first one when he swept the floor.

im surprised you didnt hear it flicking around off the gear cluster.

I pulled one of those out my sump plug hole in the first mini i had. Yours looks a lot better then mine did. Mine had gone through the gears and was all mangled up and in 2 pieces. I ended up driving the car for another 5,000klms or so before i sold it (gave the new owners a good secondhand box i was too lazy to change as the syncros were stuffed anyway)
