They have categories for accident-damaged shells and that one would be classed as scrap, illegal to restore.

Hope no-one was injured, but it's the perils of driving a car designed in the fifties.

I think in Australia you can restore it. It's just that it has to be engineered. Although I'm told under no circumstances you can legally register a salt water damaged vehicle.

If I'm driving a big old car I say let's use everybody's elses crumple zone......just joking. Although clearly doesn't work in a small car.
But basically that's what 4 wheel drivers do.

Couldn't you just reshell it in a brand new heritage body shell over there for a few thousand pounds?

Can't be less safer than a motorbike! motorbikes designed in 2030 will not be much safer than a 1959 mini... :P

Nope the rules (here in NSW) just changed, there is now no such thing as a repairable writeoff....
This was done to help stop shonks pinching cars and then rebirthing them with insurance wrecks.

So they will buy write-offs from Vic and elsewhere to do it with.

Silly law. Some write-off's are such minor damage.
