one of our lovely members on here has meantioned to me that the anti rattle plate things that i have on my 8.4's are not on my 7.5 disc brakes which could be causing this noise, as I don't have them on the 7.5's.. however from what I can see the disc brakes u buy nowadays don't have these??

You bring them across from the old pads usually. They will cause the pads to sqeak however not rattle. Is it a rattle or a squeak? Mouse or a rattle snake?

1. 7.5" calipers never had an anti rattle plate under the pins.
2. Anti-squeak shims (and new 1/8"split pins) used to be in the box of new pads, sadly it seems no longer.
3. 1/8" split pins 3"? long seem to have gone the way of the dodo. Most places now sell you cheapo soft rubbish 3mm ones from youknowwhere.
4. These 3mm split pins can wear/break/get out of the caliper, ask me how I know this. can you say NO BRAKES?? I now use bent bits of 3.2mm welding electrode 80mm long instead.
5. Last time I had a noise like this (recently) it was a badly cracked rotor. Cracked right through on the running face...

My 2c...

From everything you have said lockie, It sounds like your problem is simple. The pads aren't fitting snuggly into the caliper and shift around yes? (I've seen this before on an econovan when the wrong pads were fitted by a customer) That means the problem is either the pads are too small, or the caliper is too big. Just like Mick said.

From what you have said, its not the discs, so don't bother getting new discs (unless there is also a problem with the discs). If you want to play the lets replace this bit game and cross our fingers, then try a different set of pads.

Sometimes different brands of pads are slightly different, for example sometimes with cheap pads, they are too tight in the caliper and require a bit of filing so that they won't jam in the caliper and rub against the disc excessively. You may well have the opposite happening, or even the wrong pads fitted (if thats possible?)

What pads are they? New, or old?
If you don't know, I'd fit a new set.
I run EBC Greenstuffs and Blackstuffs in S/GT calipers, they sit a little loose (as designed to) but I get no funny noises.

[edit] Have you checked the discs for runout (sideways wobble) with a dial gauge? Like the book says? If the drive flanges were worn inside, this could be the problem.

yep ur exactly right Matt. What your explaining to me fits the bill. It sounds like the pads I have are crappy and are too small.. when looking at them it looks like this...

Do you suggest any pads that you know fit well? Does it make any difference if the caliper is the AP genuine sort or aftermarket?

Hey doc, checked that, it seemed ok to me, altho I cant be 100% sure.. Everything is new on the discs even the pads, so that's wat just makes me wonder...

Fiji, it is the van that I'm taking, hence why I'm fixing any little grumbles on the car well before I leave :) Currently the car is sitting up on car stands, having almost about everything that moves replaced and checked :)

good sh%t bro ... hate for anything to happen. my take is try some new pads (good ones that someone with some knowhow suggests). might fix it up..... might not .
however, worst come to worst you got a spare set of GOOD pads for when you nut out the issue.

I'm not very familiar with different brands of pads for mini's. I do know however that EBC seem to be a well manufactured pad.

You could try going into a local brake shop and talking to them about it, seeing what they can get for you at what price. (if your running around Logan drop into Slacks Creek Brake and Clutch). Or you can go through mini shops etc.
