I'm surprised that they hadn't done somthing about it by the time the last clubby estates were built. I doubt they still came with a cross-ply spare tyre in 1981.

They did, they cut a hole in the plywood cover so that the tyre poked through, then covered that with a sheet of tin. They probably spent all morning working on it.

LOL, sounds just right for BL in the late seventies to me. Why do the job properly when you can bodgy it up.

Yep, they were going to work out how to fit seatbelts in the back that afternoon, unfortunately there were no chocolate biscuits at mornos, so they took industrial action instead.

They probably burnt the left over plywood from the estate spare wheel covers in bins outside the factory gates. Red Robbo used them to keep his cronies warm. In between skirmishes with the rozzers, chanting and marching up and down with signs. :D

I too cut a hole in the floor behind the driver's seat and dropped an Optima in there. Made up a quick release aluminium lid and covered it all with carpet. To get to the batery I simply fold back the carpet and lift the lid.

I threw the spare out and rely on a pressure can instead (less weight and more room).
