Have you got an assistant? If they step on the brakes as hard as they can the hoses could swell. Then thats the faulty hose.

Thanks everyone for the input. Quick question: how can I tell externally that the brake hoses are buggered. If they 'fail inwards' are there any tell tale signs apart from the behaviour under braking. I'm also noticing that if I keep my foot on the pedal, it will slowly push almost all the way to the floor.

That is the master cylinder, it can be nothing else (without leaks).
It was stripped and a new seal kit fitted by B&R Brakes just before we sold it.
Sounds like it might need resleeving too...
Personally, I HATE those tandem clubby brake MC setups- they are complex and no safer than the earlier single system.
The owner/builder took it all off a late Clubby.....

So would this explain the pulling to the left too? If so, what am I up for and is it a big job?

Nope that is unrelated to the pulling problem.
MC used to creep down very slowly, that's why I got new seals put in. Was good when I sold it.
I'd say there must be a rust mark or something in the bore...

Do 1 thing at a time, I'd fit 2 new hoses first.

Had a look at both hoses while my wife pumped the brake. No swelling to be seen. Movement, but no obvious swelling/bulging. Maybe its all in my imagination. The more I look for it to pull to one side, the more I convince myself it is. Pedal to the floor only happened once too.

The hoses fail internally. They don't swell, they don't crack, they don't look bad and they don't work.

2 new hoses it is. Does anyone know if A Grade Panels are still in Hooker Street Islington? They were under 20 bucks each!

It's John Hooker St now. :D People there probably felt bad enough living in Islington let alone in the street that advertised the industry
it's famous for.
The Mini place has moved to the main road (New England Highway, I think) closer to Mayfield.

2 x new front brake hoses installed. Problem solved. Next job, extractors. Doc, was the pipe welded up in your tenure?

So it has stopped pulling to the side now?

Is the pedal still sinking?

When we got it, it had a rodschange box in, and the main pipe had been butchered to fit around the shift.
At one stage we had to put it up on a hoist and the local zorst place welded something at the front to align it. I can't remember the details.

I then binned that main pipe and the power robbing arse about fitted Lukey muffler, and put the RC40 and main pipe (off my car) on it. Instant HP gain, it made 59.4HP at ausmini dyno day.
