how do you ID one of these engines is a 1275 when the engine number is missing?

it clearly doesn't have the extra head bolts/studs of the macho 1275s.
so any identifying tips?

do you want to know if it's a 1275 of any type, or specifically a 1275 LS?

easy to tell a generic 1275, if it has ribs on the "firewall" side rather than removeable plates, then it's a 1275.

If it has removeable plates, then it might be a Cooper S 1275, if it's not a Cooper S, then it's not a 1275 at all.

To tell if it's a Cooper S 1275, there will be an extra stud in the block/head between the thermostat housing and the rocker cover, and another at the other end of the head

if the head is off it, then it's even easier to tell. If the meat between #2 and #3 cylinders is thinner than the meat between #1 and #2, then it's a 1275

LS1275 hace polution heads with holes in the front of them.

Contrary to info printed in some local books and on the web, 1275LS engines do NOT have a 12D/Ta/H engine # prefix (that is a Morris 1100S).

[edit] Mini King catalog lists 12H897 or 12H902 as the 1275LS engine # prefix. I don't own one so can't confirm if correct.

the car is a 1978 1275LS
engine number removed
no extra studs through the head like a cooperS 1275
Has disc brakes, but no brake booster

I'm not familiar with the "ribs on the firewall side". fire wall side of what - block, head, other?

Any other ID hints - short right stabiliser bar, top radiator bracket, thermo stud pattern, anything?

A 1275LS head looks like this (yes, it was one, I added the 2 extra stud holes)- note the 4 plugged holes in the front, below the spark plugs. Originally, these were air injection ports, to dilute the exhaust...



If the heater outlet at back of head is not at an angle like this, it is not a 1275 head.

in a nutshell, if you can fit your thumb between the head and the thermostat housing, it's a 1275, but check for the ribs...

between the rocker cover and thermostat housing
