I think you'd be better off selling converted bare shells and also offering to convert other peoples shells. That way you could still charge 10k or whatever and let them worry about all the other parts that make the car.
Obviously if someone wants a fully built car you could do that as well for the right price.
Just offer everything as an option, ie;
-pre approved bare shell $$
-pre approved, painted, rolling shell $$$
-pre approved, painted, fully wired with lights, rubbers glass $$$$
-everything minus the engine and exhaust $$$$$$
-fully built, registered, turn key ready $$$$$$$$$$

Matt, your biggest problem will be if it is known as a replica. It would be a very big ask for anyone to plump down 1.5x to 2x the cost of a nice, genuine Cooper S for something that is a modern recreation of an obscure Mini based car. Sure, fake Falcon GTs are up around that mark and people pay more for good Cobra and GT40 replicas, but they are iconic cars with a wide market.

On the other hand a registerable shell that they can complete themselves (someday, maybe) that costs under $10k might appeal to the person with a garage full of good bits but an unremarkable car. The fact that it might cost them $50k over the years as they build it, then improve it is neither here or there, so long as they don't expect that money back when they try and sell it.

I've often fantasised about importing a Mini Marcos, or getting a new Gem body built (I think it is the Gem moulds that still exist in SA?) to add to my collection of plastic cars and it is a lot easier to have those fantasies when you are only factoring in the price of the body.

I`ll talk with my engineer (Earl) & Stew & Arch (My panel & paint boys) & see what the cost is to pump out a converted shell first

An 850 Sport is worth atleast double the value of a regular 850 and there are more 850 Sports than Monacos.

I would guess that a Monaco would be worth atleast double the value of a Cooper S, if you could find one as these would have to be one of the rarest Mini's.

I can see a market if you were to do the shell conversion to an already built car.

Eg.

Hi matt,

Here is my fully built road registered replica s with good motor and body, can you cut the roof off and put a fast back on it and register it for me.....PLEASE!

That way your only hassle is the body work and the engineering.

Matt, the price should equal your costs plus a profit margin unless you want to go broke being a charity.

It is no point in setting out to make them for $50,000 if it costs you $60,000 to do it.

So the first thing to do is work out how many hours it takes to make one and then work out the pricing.

The next thing is to work out if there is a demand for them at your cost.

Look at Holden's effort with the Monaro. When Holden stuck the Monaro concept on display at the Motor Show every man and his dog said than they wanted one and how money was no object.
Then Holden decided to actually make them to satisfy the demand. By the time they made them and put them into the market the demand was gone. Most of it was because the blokes that said that they wanted one were dreamers without any money.

There is a heap of blokes that want a Mini Monaco but there is probably only two or three that would pay $50,000.
There would maybe be 20 that would pay $30,000.
If you could sell them for $3000 you could sell 100!
But every man and his dog will say they want one.

yep, i`m with you,,, & yes of course you are right,,,, you`re always right :-) i`d love to build them & sell them for nothing, just so that everyone can experience it,,, but obviously i`d need to win the lotto 5 times before i even concidered it, because i`d need "something" to do to keep me busy if i were a multi-besquillionair :-)

the fact is that i need to finish my real one first,,, then i actually have to build 2x more anyways, (one for my dad & the other for Stew),,, so we`ll work out the time & bits & engineering & frame work & the door window frames & the & the & the ,,, then i`ll know what a basic shell costs

i`ll go from there
thanks guys,,, you`ve kept my feet on the ground once again :-)

now if there were mini sprint bodies going for $10,000, THAT would be hard to resist!!!

The flip side of the tooing and froiing is , you build 4 Mini Monaco tarmac race Spec cars and hold Nurburgring style drive days at a good track, good insurance and sponsors needed, the people who cant afford to order one keep the operation moving with the Drive Day fee's and every now and then a Lawyer, Doctor, Dentist etc is going to say ," I want to order one Mr Read " ( 40% deposit ) , once built and paid for you become the sole service agent and 12 months later at the first major service he/she will almost certainly say " I wouldn't mind a bit more power/ torque / handling etc Mr Read , till goes ding $$ , ying yang, up down , left right , the main issue looking at it from this angle is the start capital to build 4 to start the ball rolling.
