This is a photo of my steering rack clamps. The silver clamp is new the black brackets came off the old clamps when I dismantled the car:

1. Looking at parts diagrams the black clamps are not listed. Does everybody else have these black clamps? If not it means that the rack is held against the body only.

2. Parts diagrams show a plastic insert between the clamp and the rack - of course this is out of manufacture now. What do other folks use or do you just leave it out?

For the plastic bit between the clamp and the rack my wife had some polypropylene cutting mats - there was a red, yellow, white ones for differet foods - Tupperware I think - anyway she offered one - I took it  Cut some strips - drilled some holes - good as original 8)

Same here too. Nothing was in between the rack & body when I removed the rack (same for both Minis - both Clubbies)

mine had the clamps but I don't think they are black.

I got some of the plastic bits off ebay. I guy was selling new ones a while back. cutting plastic would be cheaper and easier though as that is all they are.

Mini spares has the plastic bits as well...

Ah ha...it would appear that I have some rare clamps...Ebay here I come 8)

Only joking. How strange that some folks have them but not others.

Anyway, the plastic strip is always out of stock so I'll have to make my own.

Wife "where are you doing with that cutting board"
Me "nothing dear"

Early Minis didn't have these clamp plates. John Smidt told me the date when they came in, but I canna remember..
They are a good idea, but certainly don't make changing a rack any easier... probably why they go missing.
