Hey Guys, For some reason my wipers decided to go backwards and by the time i realised smoke started to come out from under the bonnet. I suspect the motor burnt out. Now after taking the wipers off to test and try some thing they don't work at all. Does anybody have a wiper motor that works for sale or am i better buying a new one? Any idea why they would have went backwards? Thanks JB

What do you mean by backwards, do you mean they tried to go down and toward the bonnet.

We need more info.

What happens if you leave the wiper arms off? Does the motor work?

When was the last time you used them? Is it possible a work mate played a (stupid) prank and kindly parked your wipers in the up position and then replaced your wiper arms in the normal park position?

If a replacement motor hasn't done the trick, then it would only be wiring, switch or fuse. Do your blinkers, stop lights etc still work?

yeah taken arms off but no go, wired directly from the batter to the motor and it works, well i can hear it turning. Everything else works i.e. lights, indicators etc.

No pranks, was working a few months ago car only gets driven once and a while and not very often in the rain. When i replaced the wiring the guy that did it replaced the button because it did not work so i did not think it could be that, but now i am considering it might be?

my wiper motor has a small plastic piece on the back of the coggy bit inside. If you move this to the other side the wipers go the other way. I don't know if this is the same with the earlier ones, I don't think so.

It sounds like the problem is more with the mechanism which connects and drives the wipers. I'd say it is damaged/jammed which caused your wipers to run totally out of position. eg they have slipped during the first "up" stroke then caught again on the "down" stroke and tried to go across your bonnet.

Then, because they were/are jammed you may have then burnt out the wiper motor, or everything is now completely jammed up.

I would definitely make sure the wiper mechanism is OK otherwise you will just burn out another motor.

Thats the best explanation I can come up with.

The wiper motor is doing nothing but going round and round - I think sometimes people get the idea that the actual motor is going "there and back". Therefore, there is absolutely nothing electrical that could cause them to go beyond where they normally go - something has slipped/moved/broken and then re-grabbed (if that's a word).
