I normally change gear around 3000 rpm and have yet to push my mini k over 6000 - It sounds like it is going to have a heart attack at 6000 so I would be reluctant to break it.

At dyno day my max bhp was around 5800 rpm. A rev range visited frequently... :D

no idea, never had a working tacho, but the valves were bouncing in third on the 998 coming off the bridge at Oran. Single valve springs so i'm guessing that was somewhere in the 4500-5000 range?

<edit> and my zeal redlines at a paltry 15000 rpm. the rev limiter cuts in and it just dies. its the same engine as the yzf250 so would be good for 18000 with a few tickles....

How well does the A series engines take to being revved out a lot?
I wouldn't thrash a mini, but would like to get it moving every now n then beyond an old barina or something.
I've been told if you take a 1275 past 3500-4000 every gear change, you will need a new engine after 30,000 kms. I thought this was pure crap, but was the guy right?

998's will rev forever...if you can get them that far, but even then they have no torque..

1098's will rev to about 7k safely...

1275's..load of crap whoever said that..does depend on alot of things how far you can take it..stock motor wont breathe that far so it's obviously got to be worked, and then a number of things come into it...6k is very reasonable out of a 1275...worked motor's see easily 8,000rpm and don't have too many problems, obviously life is shorter than normal, but kev's motor lasted 100,000k's of fairly hard use before the pistons became NFG, track days seeing 8,500 on occasions..etc..

no heros here.

If you built up your gearbox properly, there is no way your 1100, which is probably only putting about 40hp to the gearbox max..going to destroy the gearbox...

There are guys running 150hp through the stock gearbox without any problems, your gearbox is the least of your concerns ;)

I agree on a stock motor any more than 4500 is unecessary..

Another big ZERO here at the moment :(

But the old 1275 Cooper S was happiest just before 7,000 (and so was I :D )

I take the cooper s to 6000-6500 in motorkhanas not point going higher as its off the power band. My wifes 1100 starts valve bouncing at 5ish, that will change when the 12G295 head goes on it. My old datsun 1200 rally car would see 9,000 in rallies all the time and never bothered it, that strong 5 bearing crank.

Well I don't like to go past 6000rpm in case I snap the crank! At the moment it valve bounces at 5,500rpm but in first and second I can usually beat the valve bounce to 6000rpm, but it's a bit harder in third and fourth. Limits me to about 140km/h, which is a shame as it makes driving to work awful boring like.....

I'm looking for an excuse to fit double springs, according to my dyno sheet the power drops off very quickly once you hit valve bounce!

Anto.

The bike conversions overseas (why cant I remember the name) put that to shame. Has anyone seen that video of one shooting off from a toll booth in Holland or something and in 2-3 seconds he is going about 160km/h... NOYYYCE

Candy will quite comfortably pull between 7000 and 8000 rpm before running out of puff. Before fitting the weber and extractors though was hesitant to go beyond 6500. Once I fit a decent fuel pump to stop her leaning out, should be able ot keep pulling beyond 8000 me thinks!! :D

Ciao Ray.

Speed limits around here are usually 60 so I usually just rev to 4k. I do get it up to 6k when I get the chance :D don't really wanna take it over that and I don't know the exact condition of the engine
