Hi Guys, I`m just in the process of removing the camshaft out of my 998 and I thought I would check the timing before doing so. With No 1 cyl valves shut ( piston at tdc ) the timing mark on flywheel at clutch end was at 5 degrees before tdc. This I presume to be correct. When I removed the timing cover I was fully expecting to see the mark on the crankshaft sprocket adjacent to the mark on the camshaft sprocket, however the camshaft sprocket mark was in line with the crankshaft mark but is 180 degrees out. If I don`t move the crankshaft do I put camshaft back in this 180 degree position when I reassemble

It is a peculiarity of the A series that the timing marks are in line, at TDC firing of #4 cylinder, NOT #1.
It is correct as it is.
Put it back the same...

After fitting the timing sprockets with marks in line, the motor needs to be rotated 1 full turn, for the dizzy timing pic in the books to be correct.
None of the manuals tell you this...

they dots are in line when the #1 inlet and exhaust are rocking aren't they?

Yeah but that's NOT firing on #1, as everybody expects when the see the dizzy driveshaft pic..
It catches heaps of people out...

thanks fellas, not still 100% sure what I need to do when I put it back together as I have not got camshaft out yet but are you saying that if I put it back the way I took it out with the marks in line but not adjacent then the dizzy will be on No 4 cyl and should be on No 1 ???

Put the cam back in with timing marks in line. Then, either fit the dizzy driveshaft so that the rotor points to #4, or else turn the motor 1 full turn, THEN fit the dizzy driveshaft so rotor points to #1.
Clear as mud?
