There was a mini van in Ballarat sold just now on eBay that was claimed to be ex-Police. Did anyone on here buy it? If so I'd like to chat.

I was PM'ed by a member who asked whether NSW Police ever actually used Mini Vans in service. I've only ever seen one photo and that was in a 1970 era NSW Police recruiting brochure (see below). If anyone has any more details of Police vans please let me know.

That's what the seller told me when I asked. The owner is on a mine or gas site in NW of Western Australia.

I was trying to remember...
Last year at the Cooma car show they had a photo of police escorting heavy vehicles through Cooma on one of the display boards.
Pretty sure it was of mini van .... but can't remember. (and can't remember if had a light on top)
One of the club members took a photo of the display... but I think they are outa town for Christmas...

Such photos are very thin on the ground so I'd be very grateful if you could follow-up on this, either with someone who took a photo of the display or if you could find out who put that display together so the source can be tracked down.

When I joined the NSW Police Force in 1973 and was transferred to the STP(HWP) in 74 we had Yellow Cubby vans for wide load escorts. I'll check with a few mates to see if they have any photos and will send them to you if sucessful. Can remember one occasion turning for Old Canterbury Rd into Canterbury Rd at Hurlstone Park and changing from 3rd to 2nd and the gear stick parted company from the floor. Not good when you have a semi with a wide load bearing down on you. Anyway, I'll see what I can come up with.

Ok,
Searched the National Archives and Picture Australia and came up with one relevant and one interesting image for minis.

Enjoy!

Those links don't seem to work. What were the search terms you used? What is in the pictures?

Winabbey,

Did you manage to see the yellow clubman van in Wollongong the brave? The Farris brothers episode?

I remember the yellow vans but I have a dim memory of blue vans before them. (I may be confusing the K general duties cars)

Hmmm - the links seem to work perfectly fine for me when clicking the details in my message - Am using Firefox...

Anyhow - the first image is:

Title : Police - Australian capital territory - ACT policeman and police mini - not a van though - 1970

The second being:

Title: Antarctica - A "mini" on tracks at Wilkes Base - Antarctic 1965

Cheers!
Rob.
