This is a subject that we've been talking about on the Moke forum. One of the guys has an export spec moke, one of the ones from the early '70s with a 1275 and drum brakes that were destined for the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Next to the engine number is stamped a little outline of Australia.

Has anyone seen it on other models? What does it signify?

I have only seen it on Export Mokes. But it is not on all the Export Mokes I have seen.

I guess they did it to signify where they came from. Sort of like the Aus map on the rocker cover.

I have seen this on a number of blocks over the years, I have been told that is was to identify an australian made block, cast at the Enfield plant. I am sure John Smidt would know more.

I have only seen this stamp on late 70s A series engines so I figured that if the car was built at Enfield that the engines came from there too.

Enfield assembled cars all used imported engines.
They lost the engine plant when Zetland closed in 74.

Doesn't the fact that there are old engine tag rivet holes indicate it was cast in UK?

I'd assume so, I doubt they'd rivet a tag on just to take it off again.

I'm wondering if its some kind of security thing. Anyone can re-stamp numbers and letters, but maps of Australia are harder to do. Triumph motorbikes being imported into the US at that time had little triumph logos stamped all over the flat area that the engine number is stamped on.

I dont think I have ever seen a A series block without the engine number plate rivit holes, I beleive they all have them, from 1951 through to 2001, all types, even the Diesel tractor block has the holes. I remember the NOS 998 A+ engines we had had the holes too.

Actually, they did. They came from the UK with tags riveted on and then removed here and stamped

The ones cast here at Zetland, didn't have the rivet holes as they never had tags fitted, only engine numbers stamped on. All UK Blocks, as far as I am aware, only ever had tags riveted on, no stamping (how do they deal with theft etc???)
(Merry Christmas to you and the missus  )
