so, when you check how much oil you got in your engine ..... do you do it when is stone cold, normal operating temperature and sit for a small period or straight after a run at normal operating temperature. just curious really as to what you guys do and is the general rule of thumb out there.

Should be on the full mark when cold.
If you don't have a centre oil pickup, and you drive hard round RH bends/roundabouts, add another 500mL above full. It won't hurt anything but will protect the bearings (oil tends to run away from the pump pickup on RH bends).

Check it when the car is on level ground and if the engine has just been running give it a moment for the oil to drain down to the gearbox.

The 74 (or so) owners manual says:

"Correct readings cannot be assumed imeadiately after stopping the vehicle, such as when purchasing petrol at a service station. In these circumsatnces oil will still be suspended in the upper regions of the hot engine. Dipstick readings must be taken on level ground."

I do mine hot or cold, however when done hot, I let it stand for at least 10 minutes.

by full dr . mini, you mean the max line, right? might just stick to max line if so. have no idea about weather center oil pickup (anyway to check?). i just aim for the middle and never get below that min line.
