Folklore back then had it that the Police cam was a 731. But I've also heard since that Wade did some... I'd be interested in what is said on the build sheet.

SPO28 (which was for the GT) lists the AEA800, which is the spider drive version of the 731. Yeah, I have heard that some of the local companies had a hand in these cars too.

OK, here we go.

The following is from BMC/Leyland Service Letters sent out to dealers so they could maintain the SPO41 (MK II S) and SPO28 (Clubman GT) vehicles. I've heard the folklore about other performance mods being done but I've always been very careful to quote only what I find in authentic documentation or has been sworn to me by a retired member who drove or worked on the cars. Otherwise it remains heresay and needs to be proven before I'll quote it to others as gospel.

Distributors - I've already mentioned the spec of the MK II S dizzys above. The SPO28 Clubman GT had standard production AYG0175 (Lucas 62941090) but with Mark 1 points (Lucas GL568 or 54413568) which had a wider fibre rubbing strip than standard MK II S points (54419946). Interestingly the Lucas Australia parts book AV4 lists the "Leyland Police Mini 1971" with a 62941122B distributor. That's why I've been asking the question to see what markings are actually on the dizzy fitted to an ex-Police GT.

Cylinder head - "The current cylinder head is used. However the ports have been modified to improve performance." Also, competition inner and outer valve springs and locating collar were fitted - C-AEA524, 652 and 654.

Camshaft - C-AEA731 or 800 (same profile, different drive) fitted to both MK II S and GT.

I should quote the full details for the SPO41 distributor:

"The first 70 vehicles approx. will be fitted with MK II distributor part number AYG0175 incorporating the wide blade contact points from the Mark 1. These distributors can be identified by a white paint spot on the body.
Later vehicles will be fitted with distributor part number AYG0272, also having the Mark 1 points, plus MG centrifugal advance weights and springs, the advance curve being as MGB."

The search is on for an AYG0272 distributor - HELP PLEASE !

Thanks for that winabbey. So from your documents, it does appear that the Later MKII Cooper S and GT Police Car Engines were the same spec.

Just to clarify, the AYG0272 is the MGB Distributor?

According to my Lucas parts book the MGB MK II (1968-70) had a 629410170 which has vacuum advance, so the answer looks like a no. I don't know the BMC part number for it. Does anyone have access to an MGB parts list so we can find out?

Note: I've sent an email to Heritage MG about this.

I thought so I was sure that the MGB one had vacuum advance as you have confirmed.

So it's the vacuum advanceless body, with the MGB centrifigal advance?

this is getting interesting. Is there a possibility that BMC just used any distributers they could get there hands on for the 71 cooper S.

... it's a Cooper S Mk1 number, not seen one with `K' though. Sure it's not `H'?

Its K alright. My old man bought this car from the police auctions and can't remember ever replacing the dizzy. Not saying the cops didn't but that seems unlikely in the nine months. I have had plenty of minis that it seems they used what ever old bits they had hanging round when a model was in transition between models.
