I entered my mini in the driving events at summernats and got some interesting results!

Entrants get a free dyno run so I booked mine first thing in the morning when no one is around. I have a healthy 998 with 1.5 inch SU, extractors and a mild cam but only got 21 HP ATW (in shootout mode). Does this seem about right? It also showed that the engine was running quite lean and detonating (even though you can't hear it). Does the mixture setting affect just the idle mixture or is it at all throttle openings?

Regardless of the power output, I still won the motorkhana event and got second place in both the slalom and the grab-a-flag. Three trophies and $500 in prize money, not bad out of 1300 competitors!

Awesome work!! Sounds like you had a lot of fun and showed a few of the other competitors that horsepower isn't everything.

I'll post some pics shortly.

Any opinions of the power issue? I have drum front brakes that may have been rubbing. How much difference would this make?

i wouldnt worry about it, i trust a dyno readout as far as i can throw it.

yea tight drums would sap some power, as would your tune.

nice work winning the prize money, you can get your car tuned or put it towards some discs :)

21 for a 998 seems a bit low mine got 30 and a couple others I've seen are around the high 20's.

The way it was strapped down on the dyno also effects power readings. I know my XR6T ute picked up like 80rwhp when it was allowed to crawl a bit further forward on the rollers!!!!

I sold it for $23k. Bought it for $30k and spent another $10k on it... Had 63k kays on it. Sold it mid 2009. Get a BF MkII if you can afford it.

There were over 1300 entrants, lots of large cars, falcon and commodore V8s, turbo 4cyl plus the usual WRX, Evo, 200SX, etc. The dirt driving events are run over two days, you only get one go at each of the three events so you really have to get it right the first time out.

There were also some local rally drivers in an MX5, V8 commodore and V8 falcon - I thought they have would be really hard to beat but apparently they weren't allowed to run rally tyres.

low(er) tyre pressures will also give lower dyno power outputs.
