Just got the OK from the lady wife (AKA Boss) to get the engine for my Mini re-built...

I have been looking at "special" options for a while now and have narrowed my choice down to 2: The SC 7 port or the SC BMW K conversion. costs look to be similar.

Use is for road only no track or race etc. Just enjoying at weekends and the odd run into work...

Not sure which to go for so would like your opinions/experience/advice etc..

Hi Trog
I'll talk to you why do'nt you spend the money on a good supercharger like a sprintex they are the worlds most avanced supercharger, and possibly the most efficient at some thing like 1.6 or1.8 bar they only have 5 deg heat rise no need for intercooler and they work from 2000 rpm blower speed, the s5-150 on a 1330cc engine will make 180 hp easy, i have just bought a S5-210 and will be hoping to make 270 to 300 hp just to have a crack at the torbo guys with a 5 port head.

Hi Trog,

If it was my choice I wouldnt use either of the heads you have suggested but since you have asked I would pick the BMW head over the SC 7 port, I have had both in my hands and I think the BMW head is a far better design & far better made than the SC head. Talk to Matt (the Miniman) about the BMW heads, he is doing great things with them.

You need to decide how much power you want. Then decide why you want a different head than the std item. For weekend and occasional town trips between 50 and 80hp at the wheels will be enough, this is achievable with a std head. I have 45hp at the wheels and that dose me for a daily driver and I am beating most traffic on the road.

Personally I've got myself a BMW kit and will be building that into a 1360 or a 1380 and I'm wanting/hoping for 100bhp or more at the wheels so I can really give the "big" cars a run for their money.

Thanks for feedback... Graham I know the supercharger is probably a better way to go but... Well 2 reasons really:
1) I like the idea of a good (multi-point) injection system, should allow you to get the engine running well etc.
2) Emotion. Built this (my first) Mini in '88 in the UK about the time KAD and Jack Knight brought out their 16 valvers and Minispares were first messing about with the Arden with EFI... As a penny-less student I dreamed.. As a penniless parent I want to full-fill that dream. Still can't afford any of the above heads but the BMW or a 7 port might be within budget (Subject to approval!)

I would take it as read that the BMW head would be very well made, my main concerns with it are that there is not enough room on a round nose for the throttle bodies and will the block really last with all the mods that are needed...

The SC 7 port looks great for inlet port design as it has been designed for EFI from the outset, but I haven't seen one in the flesh...
