Had a look at my front brake pads today (8.4" discs) and there is about 3mm of meat left on them. My father recons its 1mm that they change it at, and recons that its 1mm, but of course, I looked at it and it was more than that.

Should I be looking at changing them soon?

I've heard of "black stuff" pads being good for the road. They are from the same people who make "green stuff" and "red stuff" pads, they called APC or summit like that? Where would I get a set (I would imagine it's not a very "off the shelf" kinda part) and how much are they?

I'd start looking for new pads at around 2mm. If you're unsure, change em now.

Still got 3mm on em.

when you shoud change em depends on your driving and how well you maintain your car
only thing that has to be done is to change em before they get metal to metal
this is coming from a mechanic point of view
if a car gets serviced every 10 000k and won't have anything checked in between then 3mm might be the replacing time
but if the car is being worked on most of the time and has a wheel off most weekends then 1mm is prob the right amount to change em at
remember once they go metal to metal they will destroy the rotors very very quickly
pads are cheaper then rotors

Lets put it this way... i'll now be checking it on a regular basis now I know how much is left.

1mm is too close- there's danger of the pad adhesion to the plate being lost. 1.5 or 2mm is safer.
I have EBC Blackstuffs on Barney (wife's car). Also known as Street Kevlar. They are a good road pad, but no good for track work or real spirited driving. I faded them coming down Kurrajong Hill..
Greenstuffs are the go if you drive like I do..

<edit> I used to be able to get them on line at www.autospeed.com but no more apparently.
Anybody know a source- other than the usual brake places that rip us all off?

I hardly really JUMP on the brakes, especially consistantly. Tho when I do, will the street kevlars bother me much?

for roadworthy certs the minimum is 1mm. but like the doc said that is cutting it a bit fine. i'd normaly change pads at 2 to 3 mm more if the owner has a history of not checking them and missing services etc.

1973 south african mk3, 1275 +30 (1300), RE13 cam, hif44, mildy worked head with s sized valves, pulsar dizzy, 1.5:1 minispares forged rockers.

What can happen if the pads get to low is the pistons can move in the calipers and jam, especially if they are a bit old. I have had them actually come out of the caliper in a transit van (work vehicle). Not a pleasant experience at all.

I just got a set of Street Kevlars ($53.84) from autospeed last week and I'm pretty sure they also had the greenstuffs ($80 odd I think) listed too. They were for 7.5" disks though, not sure about 8.5's

Well just got a reply back from a stockist from just down the road.

For DP127, which is the 8.4" pad part number, I was quoted $40 for street kevlar and $75 for green stuff.

Doesn't seem too bad, eh?
