Hi all.

I hopped in the car this morning and the ignition light is staying on. As I rev it, it get fainter but is still on. Now I checked the output voltage at the altenator and it reads 15.4V at idle. When I check the voltage at the battery at idle it is 12.5V.

I have been having trouble as the battery keeps draining on me.

What is wrong?
What can I check?

Cheers

The National park cruise was just a loose wire. I'm thinking dud reg too. Might take the alt out and take it over to the auto electricians.

It just seems weird that I have good voltage out at the alt but no where else.

I have check all the wires for continuity but they are all good.

Sounds like you could have an open circuit diode in your rectifer pack and with the battery draining, possibly another that is crook.

Could one of your fellow 'Gong Mini members lend you an Alternator until you get yours sorted? Surely someone nearby has one lying about.

FYI, 1300 / 1600 Fort Escort & Cortina use the same Alternator (same mounts)

Just got me thinking.

Ryan, Have you got a decent soldering iron around 50 to 60 Watt?

My guess here is, rather than an actual failed diode, a poor or broken soldered joint.

Exactly what model alternator do you have?

I don't really need the car. I have the gf's car tomorrow anyway to give it a service and take it for pinkslip. I just needed a car to get the alt to the auto sparky, so I rang my mum (good lady).

Should be ready tomorrow arvo I hope.

I'm actually a little concerned about your 15.4V out - that's a little high. It might damage the battery over time. So it could possibly be something with the regulator.

It may also damage some electrical items.

Check the boot to see if the battery has been boiling and if it has clean it up!

Yes, thanks for your concern. I too was worried about the high volts. The battery water was very low when I checked it this morning.

It should all be sorted by the auto electrician.
