What a relief!

EDIT: So let me get this straight, according to ADR, minis can have 1.6L turbos installed safely?? 300HP ATW @ 22psi in a mini anyone? It's safe according to da rools

Not quite correct Pristic, it's the tare weight you need to multiply, not the CC of the engine.

The CC you are allowed is :
- tare weight x 3.0 for N/A
- tare weight x 2.5 for Turbo/Supercharged.

If a Mini weights 650kg tare, that gives:
1950cc N/A
1625cc Boosted.

So a 1275 turbo is fine (once engineered).

Cheers,

Wait now... I agree not CC rather Tare Weight...
However the capacity to weight restriction means if it originally came out with a 1275cc thats the limit isnt it?

So the calcs of 650kgs x 2.5 = 1625
A mini never came out with a 1600cc therefore is capacity to weight is too high... meaning it cant be engineered and road legal.

What am I missing here?

In N/A format its almost 2000cc -
Does that mean you can run a 2ltr NA motor in the mini and get it engineered?
Does that mean you can run a 1.6ltr Turbo in a mini and get it engineered...

I thought the calc (1600cc and 2000cc) were the upper limit in capacity... compared to production which was a maximum of 1300cc so it wont work.

Unfortunately for every one of us who have fitted nice aftermarket racing seats on well engineered subframes, there is a muppet somewhere who has bolted E36 BMW seats into their Datsun ute using 2mm thick alloy brackets from Bunnings.

Unfortunately the legislation is not able to differentiate between the two

Well I used to run Alfetta GTV seats on home made Dexion bolted slotted angle `subframes', go figure!
Rigidity of the frames was not a strong point, so I used to lap Wakefield Pk corners whilst hanging onto the gutter with one hand and steering with the other. :P

Ok just made a few calls.

bnicho is right on the money... 1600cc turbo or 2000cc N/A can be engineered. Im talking about the NEW legislation passed some years back (June 2007 ?) - before that it was very different.

The ADR issue STILL stands though - pre 1972.

Chong - now pull your finger out... and boost Lillee :-)

Cheers,
Peter.

Yeah but Dexion is quality stuff :P

I'm so glad I don't live in NSW, according to that document if I fit a higher capacity engine I also need to fit rear seatbelts, windscreen washer jets, two speed wipers and a demister. Next they'll be wanting me to fit sunvisers too!

lol in SA that would be over-engineered hahahaha - thats a cracking seat frame! Love it.
Having said that, some laws a STOOOOPID!

ie/ Pink slip -
If you have all the nuts on the wheels, fine
If you have one missing - fail
If you have a hubcap over the missing nut - fine
No seatbelt in mini at certain year - pass
Frayed seatbelt in mini when no seatbelt was required - fail! Isnt a frayed one better than none!
Solution, remove seatbelt - pass

Got to be kidding right.

Pete

Add to that: if your car came with no seatbelts, you don't have to wear them, no fine. If you decide to put one in and not wear it, you'd get a fine for not wearing your seatbelt... Solution: remove seat belt, won't get fined

If your car comes with no rear seat belts:

No rear seat belt fitted is fine, in the event of an accident your rear seat passenger dies....

Fit a rear seat belt, this is bad, in the event of an accident your rear seat passenger lives and sues you.

Or am I being cynical? :P

Yes and no.

Yes - It has been repealed but only for newly constructed vehicles, post 1st October, 2006, however

No - Vehicles so built to comply with ADR27a must continue to do so

Really? How interesting. Or are you are making stuff up to try and look important again.

You say that cars built up to 1st October 2006 have to comply to ADR27a. Bollocks.
ADR27a was replaced with ADR37 when unleaded petrol came into use in 1986. No car built after 1986 complied to ADR27a. Take a look a the ADRs. It is quite obvious.

Vehicle Standards - National Compliance wrote:
ADR 27 VEHICLE ENGINE EMISSION CONTROL
Repealed. This standard ceased to have effect for new vehicles as from 1 October 2006. Additional to the requirements of ADR 26, defines limits of passenger car and passenger car derivative engine emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons (also oxides of nitrogen in ADR 27A) in all phases of operation.

Note:
ADRS that have been repealed and do not apply to newly manufactured vehicles.
In-service vehicles built to comply with these repealed ADRs must continue to comply with these requirements. Similarly vehicles built to comply with these repealed ADRs must continue to comply these ADRs after modification.
However it also acceptable to meet the standards of the ADR or provisions that superseded the repealed ADR. For example a vehicle built to comply with ADR 16/00 Windscreen Wipers and Washers that has its wipers and washers modified, will still be deemed to comply if the completed modification complies with the “windscreen and washer” provisions of ADR 42/04 General Safety Requirements.

But I doubt you have any interest in this thread what so ever. Why not run along and leave it those who do.
