Actually, they were. The All Synchro Box was introduced first on the MKI Cooper S from about Sept / Oct 1966, not every Cooper S was fitted with them from that time, it appears that some were lucky and some not.

Yeah, but not in 1964 which is the cut of for Nb car. Who needs Syncro on 1st anyway, us good drivers know how to double clutch and and dont syncro at all, years of driving RoadRangers taught me that.

Late Cooper S Mk1's also used the 22A1128 case from the factory. I think the other serial number on the case commenced with 12FA.

Correct! Just pulled one apart yesterday. Genuine Mk1 S gearset and case. 12FA denotes the close ratio gearset.

I always thought the 4 synchro box was introduced in the UK in September 68 and then in Australia from March 69.

So they really started over two years earlier, wow. I wonder where they hid them all for that time?

The all synchro box was fitted to every model (except autos) in the UK from about sept 68, but they commenced fitting to some the Cooper S's from around sept / Oct 66. My first Cooper S, a late 67 MKI had an all synchro box. I though it was a 'ring in' at first.

No way would my Cooper S engine turn the crank when I tried it on top of the van's 1100S box.

The Mk1 S 3 synchro box that is fitted with sc/cr gears will pull 60 mph in first gear if I wind it right out. Ist gear is very tall. The changes are a little quicker too than with the 4 synchro

Thought some of you might be interested in the following article in the Oct/Nov 1965 issue of BMC Australia's Partner Magazine which detailed the development of the A Series transmission up to the Fifth Major Design Change. If you want a better copy PM me your email address.

Also in this issue is a technical description of the newly released Australian Cooper S.
