Have to agree with this also down here

If you want to make sure ring the local Police station.

I did this years ago and was told it was ok.
But I've also heard about the line thing and seen it used.

HAS ANYONE EVER BEEN FINED FOR DISPLAYING RACEING NUMBERS?

Luckily, not fined but pulled over and asked that they be removed while the constabulary had a smoke.......... (it was in NSW).

At the end of every Rally event, we are always reminded to take them off or cover them over.......

To the best of my knowledge, I can't see how a sticker or number on your car would be illegal in NSW. So long as it was not similar to or adjacent to your number plate, didn't obscure you vision etc. If someone is really that board look up the "Road Rules Regulation 2008" and waste about a week of your life. I would think this would more become an issue when of manner of driving brings you under notice rather then anything else.

Checked with NSW Police and here's the response...

Hi Evan,

I don't believe that there are any specific requirements relating to displaying race/competition numbers on your vehicle as long as it is registered and roadworthy and it is not obstructing your view.

I suggest you contact the organisers of the Event you are competing in as they may have further information.

Kind Regards

Spoke to the Police Prosecutor here in Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday, as he is a patient of mine. Seems it is definitely not illegal in QLD to run race numbers or stickers on your car unless you put them on the window and it can obstruct your view.

Same in WA. It used to be illegal (something about street racing) but there is no law against it now.

Although that said, having big numbers on your car will draw attention from everyone, including hoons & the boys in blue.

In the "OLD DAYS" it was CAMS who objected to the numbers being shown on road
cars but it would be worth your while just to see the RTA in town and get a ruling.
Most people seem to still just tape some paper over the number.

Nothing in the traffic act in QLD forbidding it, at least when I was a police officer a few years ago. I believe the traffic act of 1974 has not changed. I drive around in the Bathurst car in full livery. Have been pulled up and questioned about the legalities of the car but never any concerns about the numbers.

Australia has had common road rules across all states (with state based modifications) since 1995.

So the number 80085 could be seen offensive?

You could have 58008, that way it would only be offensive if you roll it...(and if you manage to roll a mini you deserve an extra prize!).[/quote]

Google the story about the BMC Apprentice who won the bet that a mini couldn't be rolled when they were first released

How long ago was that? Was in in this century?

As you can see from all the answers from people that have followed common sense and done some research the rule no longer applies and has not applied for quite a long time.

The last time I can recall a race organiser making any comment about race numbers on road cars was at Amaroo in 1981 when we had to take cover our numbers when driving from the main circuit to the Hillclimb.

I am a farmer and most days of my life I have a very sharp knife in a pouch on my belt. I became concerned with the number of people being arrested for possessing offensive weapons (knives).

I asked a police friend (who is on here BTW) and his reply was that in most cases thoses arrests were that person had already drawn police attention to themselves in some other way and the knife issue was incidental to the main problem.

There was a response here on this subject and said basically if you get pulled over it was because you had attracted police attention for some other issue. Its not against the law.
