there's something going on between me and my mini - bad things keep happening, and it's either me being stupid, or the mini is seriously cranky with me...

It all started in November, I'd made a supercharger setup, had it running great and was on my to race it at DECA. A valve broke and did a fair bit of damage.

During January and February I did a complete engine and gearbox rebuild, with a bunch of sagas along the way. I got it running on Friday, in time to run it in a bit, then drive it to Oz50. I took it for a drive late on Friday night, and half way to Beechworth it stopped making boost, so I turned around and went back home.

I looked at it on Saturday and the harmonic balancer I'd modified had come apart and ground itself into nothing, so the fan belt was only *just* driving the blower. So on Saturday evening/night I made up another one, installed it, put it all back together and got to bed about 12:30.

I got up at 5:30 on Sunday to drive to Goulburn. One of the jobs I did on Saturday night was to grind clearance for the roller rockers into the alloy rocker cover. I thought I'd ground enough, but it still made a racket when I started it up. I should have fixed it then, but I didn't. Anyway, I got 50k's away from home, and decided the car wasn't up to it, so turned around and went back home.

This morning I took the rocker cover off, spotted where it was hitting and ground clearance, and the tapping was solved (wish I'd done it properly on Saturday night).

I met up with Kevan, Lloyd, Matt and Josh for lunch today and had a lovely catch up, and went back to work.

When I went to leave work I had a flat tyre, so I changed it, and chucked everything back in the boot. On my way down the driveway from where I work I smelt smoke, looked over my shoulder and the back seat was full of smoke. I stopped, jumped out and opened the boot to find it on fire, I grabbed my extinquisher and put it out, then pulled everything out of the boot to find that the jack had shorted between the rear firewall, the metal fuel line and the battery +'ve terminal.

The upshot was that the a hole had burnt in the fuel line, which was pissing fuel out, and because the car was pointing down hill, it filled up the spare wheel well, and even started to leak into the rear seat area. I rang the office and asked my colleage to bring me a drill and a fire extinquisher. It took him a couple of minutes during which time I grabbed my pliers and crushed the fuel line to stop the leak, and was using my hands to push the fuel out of the hole at the back of the spare wheel well. When he arrived I drilled a hole at the front of the wheel well to let the fuel out, then sorted out the fuel lines so I could drain the right hand tank and connect the left hand tank to the fuel line that runs to the front (if you know how a twin tank setup works). I cleaned it all up, thankfully the battery was OK, and drove home.

I'm normally very careful with not putting anything metal near the battery - my air pump in it's tough fabric bag usually lives on top of it for insulation, and I also have 'good' terminal covers, which I'd obviously not put back on properly.

So anyway, I've had a sh!t of a time with it lately, so either it's all my fault for being stupid, or my mini is cranky with me for putting a supercharger on it and treating it so badly

sigh...

dsmn Simon, that's a massively bad afternoon, glad to hear you averted disaster - hopefully your quick thinking and action will reassure your mini that you still care and it'll start behaving itself now

Could it be PMS? (Pissy Mood Sydnrome)
Just avoid for a while and all will be back to normal.

On a serious note im definately getting a fire extinguisher. Cant imagine
how bad your situation would have been without one.

yeah - the car would have burnt to the ground - the battery box was full of fuel, as well as the spare wheel well...

cheap insurance against stupidity, or even to save someone else's car from burning - I put out a fire a couple of weeks ago on someone elses car that had split a power steering line and sprayed fluid all over the turbo

What you need is for me to swap you my fast, reliable, Subaru. I'll live with gremlins.
