Hi All,

I'm looking at getting some stuff from a mini supplier in the UK. I have never purchased from OS so I am a bit new to all of this. I have a quote for the parts and the freight. Is that all I have to pay? Parts cost A$650 and freight is quoted as being A$150. (Total A$800).
Will I have to pay any duty/tax when coming into the country or is that all I will have to pay? Is there anything hidden...or am I missing something?

Hi there,

If the total in Aus Dollars is under $1000.00 no, if over you will have to pay import duty.

Cheers.

But double check your bank on foreign transaction fees or you might get a bit of a shock. Most of the big ones now charge you a foreign transaction fee (on top of the questionable exchange rate), Westpac is I think ~3% of purchase price.

If over $1000, you are also liable for GST.

They have their own way of working it out. Recently I bough goods (new and custom manufactured) from the US, some $2 300.00 AUD worth, before shipping. When it landed I was expecting a Duty and GST bill, however I was only hit up for GST. I enquired with the shipping agent regarding duty and they said that there was none. Go figure.

I have always asked companies to state the value as less than $1000 even when it was well over. All have been more than helpful in doing so.

Some items actually attract no import duty - all depends on the tariff classification. If you're REALLY interested, you can check it out on the Customs website, but it takes a bit of time to find the right listing and figure it out - you may end up just pulling your hair out

I guess you got lucky - nice!

650.00 GBP = 1,043.93 AUD

I have only paid duty and GST on the amount over $1000.00 AUD.
