I'd keep it and when the 5 speed fails in 10,000kms whack the S box back in.
:P

It depends who's 5 speed box you go for, but it's not too hard to get even a MKII Cooper S Gearbox to fail sooner than that.

Minispares 5 speed helical box a few guys on ausmini have them and like them.

These are are good gearbox. The 'power-limit' claim from Mini Spares is just an arse covering exersize. 1st, 2nd, 3rd & top are all stock gears, replaced shafts and bearings are 'up-rated' so they will take at least anything a stock box will take.

While the Mini Sapres ones are good, if you can get them, the road going, helical cut, baulk ring synchro, Jack Knight ones are even better.

I thought the story was that the 5th gear couldn't take the torque, it hangs out and isn't all that well supported

On the Minispares box the 5 gear is supported well. The extended "lay shaft" has a pair of taper rollers supporting it either side of the 5th gear & syncro hub. The output shaft extension is supported by 2 very large ball races.

As I have said before had one for years and never let me down. I will try to dig out some pictures of it on Monday, think they are on the work computer.

that would be great :)

I would like to see how the laygear and shaft are put together, I can't get my head around it

Quick sketch before I go out to give you something to think about over the long weekend!

http://s962.photobucket.com/albums/ae101/troggle/?action=view&current=5speedlayout.jpg

Sorry couldn't get it to load as an image...

Maybe not too clear but best I could do at short notice...

Few notes,

1 and 3rd motion shafts are standard except the out put pinion has been machined down in width to allow a splined drive adaptor to be fitted. The 5th gear shaft is splined to match...

Layshaft assembly is an absolute ***** to assemble, sketch is missing splines for 5th gear syncro assembly.

Layshaft end taper roller goes into a "new" 3rd motion shaft bearing retainer which also locates the revers gear shaft.

Hope that helps...

Last time I tried to explain how this worked on a forum I got called a noob!

Has to be a rod change as the 5th gear goes where the remote selectors are

Description

You'll get the best of both worlds - acceleration and easy cruising - with this Mini Spares Evolution five speed. The Final drive ratio ratio is 3.44, so you'll have the acceleration as before through fourth gear. But with the overdrive fifth gear the effective final drive is now 3.037, great for highway cruising. Fully assembled, ready to install. (Available in rod-change only.)Covered under guarantee for parts only with NO labour claim costs, Other variants such as straight cut or with x pin difffs available. Remember! Although this gearbox by design is infinitely stronger, the weakest part of any A plus gearbox is the standard 2nd gear and this box is no different. Not for Turbos where boost is adjustable or powerful engines. Fitted in 1275cc-1380cc including Minispares old 8 port head road going car with 286 camshaft it has proven ultra reliable. There are 58 extra parts including machining. Owing to the closure of Powertrain all gear tooling and manufacture was sold off, so some secondhand parts are used in these gearboxes if in perfect condition. New parts nearly always used are first and reverse gear, 2nd gear and diff plus the extra 5 speed gears of laygear and 1st motion shaft.
